The Chinese civilization began about 4000 years ago. The Chinese referred to their land as the “Middle Kingdom” because they believed they were the center of the civilized world. Early Chinese civilization grew between the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers. BIRTH OF THE CHINESE CIVILIZATION

System of Organization: 

System of Organization Family was central to society First group of people to have two names: a family name (first) and a personal name (second) Strict rules for everyone Most important was respect for one’s parents Respect and obedience to ruler The ruler was like a super-grandfather who had supreme responsibility for the welfare of the Chinese people.

CHINESE DYNASTIES The Shang Dynasty (1650-1027 BC) Artisans excelled in the craft of bronzework Raised silkworms for raw silk Earliest evidence of Chinese writing The written language fostered unity within the different parts of China, because they couldn’t understand each other’s spoken language

The Zhou (Chou) Dynasty (1027 – 256 BC) The longest ruling dynasty The first to use the Mandate of Heaven The age of inventions: iron, weapons, tools, money Three school of thought arose during the Zhou Dynasty: Confucianism Taoism (Daoism) Legalism Buddha was spreading his teachings at about the same time, but his ideas hadn’t reached China yet.

Confucius : 

Confucius Lived during the time when the Zhou Dynasty was in decline (born 551 BC) and much of the empire was unstable and chaotic. Known as a great teacher, Confucius created a new structure for society as a way to bring about stability. He believed there were 5 main relationships in society: 1. Ruler and Subject, 2. Father and son, 3. husband and wife, 4. older brother and younger brother, 5. friend and friend. A code of proper conduct regulated each of these relationships. For example, rulers should practice kindness and virtuous living. In return, subjects should be loyal and law-biding. He also believed children should always respect their family, most importantly their elders.

The Qin (Chin) Dynasty – 221-206 BC: 

The Qin (Chin) Dynasty – 221-206 BC Shi Huangdi was the first Qin Emperor Extremely ruthless and paranoid ruler, but did unify China under one Empire Began construction of Great Wall of China (wall wouldn’t be complete until the Ming dynasty) to keep the Mongols out of China. Wall would prove to be completely ineffective. Built tomb with terracotta soldiers standing guard

The Silk Road - Sometime between 200 BC and 100 AD, a trade caravan arose and covered a distance of about 4000 miles. Although travel was expensive and dangerous, men on camels road through mountains & deserts to trade goods like silk, spices, tea, & porcelain from the East for linen, glass, and precious stones from the West. Eventually small villages arose along the Silk Road. Because of the Silk Road, Buddhism spread rapidly throughout Asia, and eventually became the main religion of that area. Linked China to the Roman Empire, & many cultures in-between.

The Mongols : 

The Mongols During the late 1100’s, the Mongols became a dominant nomadic group. Expert fighters and horseback riders Gengis Khan Great military leader, organized the Mongols military to become the most skilled military unit in the world at that time. Set out to create a large empire

Yuan Dynasty: 

Yuan Dynasty The Mongols who conquered China became known as the Yuan Dynasty. Mongols were able to take control of China in 1279 (52 years after Gengis’ death) Mongols created the largest land empire in history. The territory extended from China to the western borders of Europe. Kublai Khan, grandson of Gengis, became the first Mongol emperor of China. Marco Polo claimed to have lived in Kublai Khan’s court for 17 years.

Mongols complied with Chinese traditions to keep the Chinese under control while still maintaining Mongolian culture. The Mongolian empire gradually lost control of many of its lands. In China, the Ming Empire claimed the Mandate of Heaven, and took over ruling China Mongols gradually adopted Chinese ideas and practices.
