I also thought that this sort of activity of coming together and working in a team, getting involved in effective projects, is enormously beneficial in terms of developing self confidence and a general approach to life…I judge its success in the effect it has on the individual. To enable one person to develop as a real rounded human being who may not have had the chances in the past…makes it all worthwhile.”HRH The Prince of Wales: “I felt there was a particular need to find a way to enable people from all walks of life, at one point in their lives, to come together and make a contribution to their own locality, their community or their country. To enable one person to develop as a real rounded human being who may not have had the chances in the past…makes it all worthwhile.” HRH The Prince of WalesTHE TEAM PROGRAMME: Launched in 1990, the Team Programme enables young people from all walks of life to work together to help their communities and then move on to the employment, training or education that they seek. It runs from over 300 locations throughout the UK. It gives young people another chance to lead safe and successful lives THE TEAM PROGRAMMETHE TEAM PROGRAMME: It is directly targeted at disadvantaged 16 - 25 year olds, in particular the long-term unemployed, young offenders, care leavers, and educational underachievers. The young people increase their employability through a series of individual & team challenges that are designed to develop confidence and self-esteem, motivation, qualifications and experience. It is a programme that changes attitudes, giving young people new belief in themselves. THE TEAM PROGRAMMETHE TEAM PROGRAMME: The community gains, in the short term, through the community projects carried out and, in the long term, through re-engaging young people in society, particularly through employment and continued volunteering. An example of added value: Value:12 people x 8 days x 6 hours = 576 hrs Cost of gardening labourer @ £4.20 per hour x 576 hrs = £2419.20 THE TEAM PROGRAMMEHOW DO WE DO THIS?: HOW DO WE DO THIS? I joined the course because I wanted to gain hands on experience working with others. I had to learn not to judge people by my own standards and I have had to learn to accept that 100% to me can be a different thing to some-one else though this took me a long time to realise and accept. I have also learnt that I have good leadership skills. I developed my skills and was able to lead and review on a weekly basis. I love leading. It allowed me to care for people in a professional way, though at times it was stressful as you feel very responsible for people, and I found detaching myself and letting go at the end of each day quite hard to do. I will never forget the friends I have made and everyday has been a great experience. I would recommend the course to anyone. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity and would advise them to take the plunge. You can learn so much about yourself in such a short time. Since joining the course my ambition has grown and I have learnt that I am so much more capable then I thought I was. I have been accepted to do an NNEB which starts at college in September. Before I joined the Prince’s Trust I was stealing cars and getting into a lot of trouble with the police. I heard about the course through a friend and I saw what a remarkable change it had made to him. I wanted to gain self-confidence, commitment and discipline from the course. I have gained the ability to empathise with others and I am also learning to not make judgements about others. Previously I could not do this. I have learnt that deep down I do care for people and I can succeed if I put in the effort. The best experience I had on the course was during week 2 when we did the raft building, as it was well done. None of the team really knew each other that well and this was our first task that we had done together and we succeeded. The hardest part of the course for me was whenever anyone queried me. I feel when people challenge my ideas they are putting me down and this can make me defensive and aggressive. This is changing because I am learning that everyone has their own opinion and when people challenge me it is not because they are putting me down but that they just wanting to put their point of view across. I would always recommend this course to people who I live with at the Y.M.C.A. because it really made me into a better person, and if it can do it to me it could do it to anyone else. Slide24: WHAT PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN ON THE COURSE HAVE TO SAY... Dan: I am 25 years old and before I started the course I was working as a welder and labourer before I was laid off. I joined the course after seeing some photos from a previous course at the job centre. The course looked exciting and challenging, so I asked my New Deal Advisor to refer me. I have gained confidence dealing with people particularly in the team and in daily life. My leadership has improved: I thought I couldn’t do it but with planning I found I knew what I was talking about and that helped me to support and communicate with the others. My ability to solve problems has improved: before I used to get frustrated and put things to one side, but now I look at problems more and don’t rush to avoid them. I have gained good friends from the course and I will try to keep in touch regularly with them. The best bit for me was the residential because of the challenge of having to stay there together and not being able to walk away. This was a good thing – not having anywhere to run, you just had to face things. If I could I would have run from the written work. The course has made me look at words more, shown me that I can do things (when I really thought I couldn’t) and helped me to accept that I need to do something about my reading and writing. Working as a team has been really good, different nationalities, points of view, experiences, backgrounds, etc. When I finish the course I hope to be assisting on the next team which is exciting but nervous at the same time. It will be like leading: hard but really good…really satisfying. You do not have the permission to view this presentation. In order to view it, please contact the author of the presentation.
