She is near deaf and I could hardly even ask one question however, she has had a very interesting medical past. The Question of the Day : The Question of the Day Q: I’ve noticed that you’ve been smoking for the last 50 years. Why is that? She told me that she was extremely rich at the time compared to her neighbors as she was head of the health division in her district. During the time she lived, Mao Zedong tried his Cultural Revolution and new industrial ideas that ultimately failed and starved the Chinese nation. She was always generous and gave her money to those who needed it. She donated so much that she never really fed herself properly and eventually starved herself. She was later diagnosed with a painful ulcer. She had to undergo stomach surgery and half her stomach was removed. Because there was no pain medicine back then for the stomach, the doctors told her to smoke and she has been smoking ever since. She tells me that it is quite addicting and that although she has never experienced something like lung cancer, she coughs quite a bit and smokes a pack a day. I tell her that is very unhealthy but she says that she can’t stop after 50 years of habit. I tried asking her more questions but she couldn’t hear me properly. I roughly translated what she said from Chinese to English because I can hardly hear her and she can’t hear me when I tell her to speak a little louder. Immigration : Immigration I am the first generation of my family to be born in the United States My father and mother married in China and gave birth to my oldest sister She was constantly sick and so they decided to move to the United States My dad studied at Virginia Tech and got his PhD in physics. My father’s side was extremely poor and labeled a “bad” family. My mother’s side was famous and rich enough to get through hard times. For this, my parents and their ancestors were malnourished and remained short. Interestingly, my grandpa on my Father’s side had a disease who’s name is still a mystery to me. He grew an extra bone in his left knee which causes a painful tear in the muscle. He passed it down to my dad who unfortunately passed it down to me. But with constant excersize, I’ve learned to ignore this pain and now I am participating in many athletic sports. She battles her disabilities while still running a family of 9. I always try to help her do the dishes and yet, every time I don’t have time, my heart cracks a little because I truly care about her and watching her go through the pain of even standing up makes me feel so lucky to have such a mom. I actually have written a letter. It was more than a letter rather, it was a submission to San Diego’s 50 Best Mom’s and she was one of them. This was last year and it is attached towards the end. 50 Best Mom’s Intro : 50 Best Mom’s Intro Strength and sacrifice are related in similar ways. Strength is the ability to have the mental focus and power to take in everything and show nothing. Sacrifice is the ability to let go for the benefit of something. Combining the two, a strong person has the ability to sacrifice without emotion or regret. My mother has the strongest ability to sacrifice. It is not easy raising seven children, especially with the painful spine condition, bulging disk, however, my mom would sacrifice anything, even her health, to maintain peace and happiness in the family. My Future Continued : My Future Continued In the future I see myself working as an economist perhaps even a politician. One of the two. In three years I hope to be in Stanford or UC Berkley. In 5 years I hope to have a major and in 9 years I hope to be working and possibly married. If I could ever possibly accomplish this, I’d do everything it takes to pay back my parents not only monetarily, but all the suffering and pain they went through to raise me the way I am. Media Awareness : Media Awareness The media actually does tend to influence the way I live my life. Musically, I like to listen to what makes me happy. Activities, I am slightly influenced.
