Tides are caused by slight variations in gravitational attraction between the Earth, the moon, and the sun in geometric relationship with locations on the Earth’s surface http://www.physicalgeography.net/fundamentals/8r.html What is the Bay Of Fundy? : The Bay of Fundy is a bay located on the Atlantic coast of North America. It is a 170-mile-long, straight-sided, somewhat funnel shaped bay that forks into two other bays. What’s special about this bay, is that has one of the largest tide differences in the world. Everyday the water level changes 16 meters. That’s about 50 feet! The Bay of Fundy is a special example of ocean tides because the difference from low to high tide can be up to 50 feet. Also, because of the unique shape of the bay, interesting patterns are revealed. These special patterns show the relationship between the tides and the lunar cycle. http://www.classzone.com/books/earth_science/terc/content/investigations/es2406/es2406page01.cfm?chapter_no=investigation Alternative Energy Source? : Tidal power involves building a dam across the opening of a tidal basin. The dam includes a sluice that is opened to allow the tide to flow into the basin. This technique creates hydropower which can be used to generate electricity from the water elevated in the basin.
