Burj Al Arab برج العرب : Burj Al Arab برج العرب Jumeirah Beach, Dubai

Introduction: Introduction The Burj Al Arab is a 7 star luxury hotel located on the sandy beach of Jumeirah, Dubai. As well as being the worlds only star hotel, it is also the worlds tallest hotel at 321 meters above sea level. It was designed by by Tom Wright of WS Atkins PLC and stands on an artificial island 280 meters away from Jumeirah beach. It is connected to mainland by a curving private bridge. It was designed to symbolize Dubai’s urban transformation and to mimic the shape of an Arab Dhow.

Features/Information: Features/Information Over $650 Million to build Was cooled by half a degree increments during construction to keep it cool Engineers created a surface of rocks in a honeycomb pattern to protect it from erosion Engineers drove 230 40 meter long concrete piles to secure the foundation Helicopter landing pad Up to $28,000 a night

Construction: Construction Construction of Burj Al Arab began in 1994, and was completed in 1999 It was built n the shape of the Arab dhow, a type of Arabian vessel. Two ‘wings’ spread in a V shape to form a ‘mast’, with the space in between them making the worlds largest atrium. It needed to be a building that would become synonymous with the name of the country.

Exterior: Exterior The structure is made of a steel exoskeleton wrapped around an reinforced concrete tower. The space between the wings is enclosed by a Teflon-coated fiberglass sail, curving across the front of the building and creating an atrium inside. The sail is made of a material called Dyneon, spanning over 161,000 square feet, consists of two layers, and is divided into twelve panels and installed vertically. The fabric is coated with DuPont Teflon to protect it from harsh desert heat, wind, and dirt. The fabricators estimate that it will hold up for up to 50 years.

Interior: Interior While the exterior is ultra modern, the interior guest space is a compilation of lavish and luxurious architectural styles from both the east and the west. The hotel boasts 8,000 square meters of 22-carat gold leaf and 24,000 square meters of 30 different types of marble. Near the top, you can find a helicopter pad, which was once used as a tennis court.

Rooms And Prices: Rooms And Prices The Hotel is among the worlds most expensive, with prices ranging from $1000 a night to $15000 a night, with the Royal Suite pricing at $28,000 a night! Suites feature design details that juxtapose east and west. White Tuscan columns and a spiral staircase covered in marble with a wrought-iron gold leaf railing show influence from classicism and art nouveau. Spa-like bathrooms are accented by mosaic tile patterns on the floors and walls, with Arabian-influenced geometries, which are also found elsewhere in the building.
