SPORT FOR ENVIRONMENT:

SPORT FOR ENVIRONMENT International Environment Executive Committee Tuesday, January 8, 2008 Paris

Slide2:

“The practice of sport, sport facilities and sport events all have a significant impact on the environment. It is important to promote environmentally sound management, fit to address inter alia green procurement, greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency, waste disposal and the treatment of soil and water. European sport organisations and sport event organisers should adopt environmental objectives in order to make their activities environmentally sustainable. By improving their credibility on environmental matters, responsible organisations could expect specific benefits while bidding to host sport events as well as economic benefits related to a more rationalised use of natural resources.” Quoted by the “White Paper on Sport”, presented in Bruxelles on the July 11th 2007 by the Commission of the European Communities.

Slide3:

“ The relationship between sport and environment includes either the impact of sport on the environment neither the impact of the environment on sport. All the activities, the events, and the sports facilities have an impact on the environment, creating an ecological print…” “It’s also important that sport is practiced in an environmental sustainable way, since the deterioration of the environmental conditions reduces the health, the well-being, the quality of life of persons and people... ” Report Sport for Development and Peace - Inter-Agency Task Force United Nations

IMMEDIATE ACTIONS:

IMMEDIATE ACTIONS Riqualification of urban areas and spaces Study of environmental impact of events and activities Individuation of “outdoor” spaces into parks and reserves Reconvertion of sport construction industry Riqualification of “Water and Sport” topic Green shopping Environmentalist budget and compensations Technicals, managers and operators training

RIQUALIFICATION OF URBAN AREAS :

RIQUALIFICATION OF URBAN AREAS To retrieve in every quarter areas destinated to free play and to sport. Cicleways, safe routes to move by feet, areas to play and to make free sport, good socialization places. CITY AS A PLACE TO LIVE IN, NOT TO SURVIVE IN.

THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ON SPORTS EVENTS:

THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ON SPORTS EVENTS To create parameters to build up an “INDEX OF ECOEFFICIENCY”

PARKS AND NATURAL RESERVES: “OUTDOOR SPACES”:

PARKS AND NATURAL RESERVES: “OUTDOOR SPACES” To promote sports activities “en plein air”, establishing parameters of environmental sustainability

PARKS AND NATURAL RESERVES: “OUTDOOR SPACES”:

PARKS AND NATURAL RESERVES: “OUTDOOR SPACES”

RECONVERTION OF SPORT CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY:

RECONVERTION OF SPORT CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY To reconvert old sports facilities respecting standards of energy conservation and eco-efficiency To think up and to project a “new generation of sports facilities”, sustainaible for construction’s materials, location use and cost-benefit relation “Social and sports facilities” suitable to sport for all, but able to become a place for other public uses during the day.

RIQUALIFICATION OF “WATER AND SPORT” TOPICS:

RIQUALIFICATION OF “WATER AND SPORT” TOPICS To study new biological methods of water depuration (swimming pools and swimming facilities) To eliminate the use of mineral water in plastic bottles To reduce the use of water in shower facilities using flow reducers To protect the entire water cycle giving back to rivers their natural role

GREEN SHOPPING:

GREEN SHOPPING To promote the shopping of products made with recycled materials or with a long life cycle To interdict the use of throwaway products To shop products of certified environmentalist brands

ENVIRONMENTALIST BUDGET AND COMPENSATIONS:

ENVIRONMENTALIST BUDGET AND COMPENSATIONS To insert in the projectual phase of every activity or event an environmentalist budget above the economical budget. To promote actions to compensate the CO2 emissions with reafforestation.

TECHNICALS, MANAGERS AND OPERATORS TRAINING:

TECHNICALS, MANAGERS AND OPERATORS TRAINING To define training courses about sustainability topics for technicals, managers and operators To create knowledges of environmental analysis, environmental budget, relation between natural and social systems To define courses, meetings and international stages to expand on these matters
