Slide3: Every third Monday in January, Americans honor the civil rights work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Slide4: Some people also remember Mrs. King’s efforts to create a national holiday to honor her late husband’s dream.
Slide5: Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott were married on June 18, 1953, by Rev. Martin Luther King, Sr.
Slide6: Many times, Martin and Coretta marched side-by-side on their journey for justice and equal rights for all people.
Slide7: On April 4, 1968, Dr. King was assassinated and Mrs. King was left alone to raise their four children and to carry out their work.
Slide8: The year that her husband died, Coretta Scott King established the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change in Atlanta, Georgia.
Slide9: Coretta believed that her husband’s dream would be best remembered with a national holiday. For over ten years, she worked tirelessly to get a holiday named for Dr. King.
Slide10: Finally, in 1983, President Ronald Reagan made Martin Luther King, Jr. Day a national holiday.
Slide11: Since that time, Dr. King’s Day has been used as a time for service in communities around the United States.
Slide12: Throughout her later years, Mrs. King worked with many people to promote civil rights around the world.
Slide13: When Coretta Scott King lost her battle with cancer in 2006, she was laid to rest next to her husband at the King Center.
Slide14: Mrs. King will be remembered as a faithful wife, a loving mother, and a torchbearer for civil rights.
Slide15: Some people will also remember Mrs. King’s determination to create the Martin Luther King, Jr. national holiday.
