Slide 2:
The second part of Warren Friss' message was specifically about the business of sports licensing; a $13 billion industry that is still growing. Warren Friss provided details of the licensing business, how the different sports compare in terms of revenue as well as the legal issues that surround sports licensing including personality and trademark rights. Warren Friss engaged attendees interested in a sports career by working with them to create a mock sports license agreement negotiation. Warren Friss also discussed a topic that is currently at the forefront of the sports world, the NFL lockout and it's impact on the licensing business. Mr. Friss reviewed various terms that can be negotiated in license agreements to try to address the impact a work stoppage could have on licensees. Finally, Warren Friss discussed another newsworthy topic, fantasy sports leagues. The class engaged in a lively conversation about whether Pete Rose should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame, as well as the legality of fantasy sports. Warren Friss pointed out that fantasy sports, which is played by millions of people and growing, has been made legal, with certain restrictions, through legislation. The lecture, provided by Warren Friss, at Olin School of Business at Washington University in St. Louis was a great success and helped to provide students with working knowledge of the sport industry and hope that they too, like Warren Friss, can have a successful career in the world of sports.
