WATERSHED: A community cares for its land is a community-based project combining images and interviews with events focused on a traveling exhibit. This exhibit of images of wetlands and portraits of people I have interviewed about their relationship to wetlands is intended to draw attention to conservation and habitat preservation. The larger project also involves the development and publication of a guidebook to local public access wetlands. Since the first exhibitions in Rochester, I have taken the exhibit to other venues to continue the dialogue. The places and people are local, but the theme and content is universal, as we recently saw in the disastrous consequence of wetland destruction in the US gulf coast. WATERSHED a community cares for its land Christine SevillaWATERSHED communication channels: WATERSHED communication channels A variety of communication channels were employed to appeal to different groups.WATERSHED communication channels: WATERSHED communication channels The WATERSHED art exhibit includes over 200 photographs of wetlands in matrices and as individual images, as well as within eight artist books containing original texts. This exhibit has traveled to several locations, such as the Brighton Town Hall in November of 2005, and will continue to travel. WATERSHED communication channels: WATERSHED communication channels Opening events took place on May 13, 2005 at Rochester’s High Falls Center and on July 29, 2005 at Rochester’s City Hall Link Gallery. Several presentations with slides and artwork have taken place, beginning with the event in the Susan B. Anthony Lounge of the First Unitarian Church on December 7, 2005. WATERSHED communication channels: WATERSHED communication channels Members of the media were invited to cover the news forum given by area conservation leaders at each opening event. Outdoor enthusiasts (hikers, boaters, birders, hunters) were invited to these events to create new relationships and synergies. WATERSHED communication channels: WATERSHED communication channels The exhibit traveled to The Nature Conservancy Annual meeting at Skaneateles Falls on September 10, 2005. After the meeting, I provided a workshop in landscape photography. When the exhibit travels to other Upstate locations tutorial classes will be offered on how to create a guide to local wetlands. WATERSHED communication channels: WATERSHED communication channels Interviews began with conservation leaders, stewards of the land, town planners, town supervisors, agency chiefs, volunteer organization leaders and continue with interviews of developers and land owners. Exhibited portraits and excerpts from interviews drew interest as they provided brief perspectives on wetlands, capturing those perspectives in the words of those interviewed. WATERSHED communication channels: WATERSHED communication channels The exhibit catalog contains the images in WATERSHED and documents the wetland location along with the title of each piece. The catalog also includes a description of the project as well as expanded views of several images. WATERSHED communication channels: WATERSHED communication channels A guidebook makes it easy to find local wetlands with a minimum of initial information. Illustrated by over 60 images, the book is mainly organized by location with maps created by the Soil and Water Conservation Service, with additional wetland lists sorted by town, organization and preserve name. The book provides basic background on wetlands and encourages involvement in protecting the land.
