P- productive R- respectful I- integrity/honesty D- driven E- environment 1 Contributors: KMIS Pioneers and Ms. Robbs Spring Edition, 2011 Spotlight on Art $1.00 Pioneer Times WHY ART IS BEAST! By Cindy Robbs Well of course you all know that I would say that because I love Art! There are so many reasons why Art is important, and why it impacts so many lives. Art is all around us everyday, every minute and every second. Art is in the design of the building we sit in right now. It is in the clothes we wear, the games we play and in programs we watch on television. Even Nature is filled with unique one-of-a-kind works of Art. These are all reasons why every student should be a part of an Art class in school. Marvin Bartel, a professor at Goshen College listed even more reasons why Art education should be in every school: A reason for art is to tell stories, events, myths, beliefs, and literature. A reason for art is to convince, inform, inspire, criticize, persuade, make the world a better place. A reason for art is to enhance a religious ceremony (stained glass in Gothic church - tile of Mosque). A reason for art is to create personal and group identity, inspire, school, cultural, and/or national identity, loyalty, and spirit (flags, mascots, logos). A reason for art is to tell how people used to look and behave. A reason for art is to tell us how places and things used to look. All of Mr. Bartel’s reasons are great reasons, but Art was important to me as a student for a different reason. When I was in Middle and High School, school became very difficult for me. I struggled in the regular classroom, and had to work really hard to make good grades. Art class, however, was very different. I loved being there and getting to create and learn about new materials (like clay and paint). Art was the one class that I excelled in because I loved it so much I practiced all the time. I know that I got into college because of my artistic ability (my grades in my other classes were just average). So Art for me became my stepping stone into a higher education and a job that I absolutely love!! Everyday I get to share with my students all the things that I have learned about art, and hopefully I can teach them to love and appreciate art as well. Maybe, just maybe I can help one of you who are like I was in school (working really hard for average grades) begin to like to school again because you fall in love with Art!
