Partner w/ staff member to select title. Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors select from list. HistoryWhy have it?: Encourages reading for pleasure. Develops the school into a stronger community through literature. Provides a broader, richer base of books for future reading. Increases students’ communication skills. Provides leadership opportunities for students. Why have it?Freshmen Book: Freshmen Book Summer 2003, A Lesson Before Dying, by Ernest Gaines Summer 2004, Big Mouth and Ugly Girl, by Joyce Carol Oates Summer 2005, Sphere, by Michael Crichton Summer 2006, I Am David, by Ann Holm Summer 2007, The Weight of All Things, by Sandra Benítez October: October Visit junior English classes to recruit new leaders. Match faculty/student leaders. Faculty and student leaders meet to select five choices. Doughnuts! November/December: November/December Summer reading committee checks professional reviews of potential titles. English Department checks for conflicts. January: January Summer reading list selected. List includes title, book cover image, author, summary, faculty leader, and senior leader. February: February List posted online. Permission slip distributed to all freshmen, sophomore, and junior classes. March: March Create book displays in the hall and the library of summer reading books. Summer reading signup begins in library. Absent students signup for book. April: April Reassign any students/faculty whose group did not have enough members. May: May Final list posted on Edline. Remove students not returning to Jesuit. Transfer students select books; add to database. Summer: Summer READ! Contact new teachers about summer reading. Senior leader develops discussion questions and ten question quiz. September: September Book discussion leader orientation for seniors. Pizza! Post “Where does my reading group meet?” in halls. Post book group sign outside each classroom. Distribute group list and prizes to faculty. Book discussions during second week of school.
