It has a strategic position linking the West with the East Capital City: Tirana which is easily accessible from the main European capitals. The city became a leading cultural centre in the days of the Roman Republic and it was there that Julius Caesar sent Octavian, later the Emperor Augustus, to finish his studies. Many statuary and pottery finds from Roman times are in Apollonia's archaeological museum, housed in a 13th-century Orthodox monastery. The town was well established by the 13th century, but the arrival of the Turks in 1417 initiated a slow decline.
