Then the Acts of Union resulted in a political union with the Kingdom of England to create the Kingdom of Great Britain Slide4: Most of the Scottish population is made of English, Scottish, Welsh, and Northern Irish Christianity is the predominant religion The Black Watch : The Black Watch What purpose does this military band serve? Why do they use this particular instrumentation?The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland : The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland The Black Watch is an infantry battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. Part of the Scottish Division, it was the senior regiment of Highlanders The regiment's name came from the dark tartan that they wore and from its role to "watch" the Highlands The Royal Stewart Tartan was worn by the regimental pipers due the royal designation, and as a sign of loyalty to Queen and country Slide8: The Black Watch began as a peace-keeping battalion to watch over the Highlands of Scotland and prevent fighting among the clans The Black Watch has fought in every major war since its formation including the most recent Iraq War The pipes and drums battalion came from the tradition of using the pipes to rally the spirits of the men when they attacked another clan In addition to being an active military unit, the Pipes and Drums of the Black Watch travel worldwide performing authentic Highland music in traditional dress Original Bagpipes: Original Bagpipes Probably developed in the Middle East It is debatable how they made their way to the British Isles The role of the bagpipe varied from place to place. In Britain the bagpipes replaced other instruments as the chief instrument of the minstrel who acted as the chief carrier of news, gossip, and music around the country Also played a large part in festivalsTraditional Bagpipes: Traditional Bagpipes Many different cultures, including Bulgaria and Britain used different types of bagpipes, but at the beginning of the 20th century the function and use of bagpipes declined due to their limited range Due to the large number of Scottish pipers who were trained for battle in WWI and II, Highland pipes became more popular and are the most well-known world wideSlide11: Clans are associated with geographic locations, which are usually controlled by clan chiefs who reside in the ancestral castle or manor A chief could add to his clan by adopting other families, and also had the legal right to outlaw anyone from his clan, including members of his own family In modern terms a chief can accept whom he wants to, or limit clan membership to those with particular surnames. Clans: Clans Traditional Scottish society is based around clans Each clan is a large group of related people, theoretically an extended family, all descended from the same progenitor Each clan has it’s own tartan (plaid from which the clan’s kilt is made), coat of arms, and clan mottoFamous Clan Names: Famous Clan Names MacKintosh MacDonald Campbell Douglas Kennedy Stewart (the official tartan of the Queen of England Clan MacColloch: Clan MacColloch Traditional spelling of the name has been changed to various spellings Clans of MacColloch’s in both the Highlands and the Lowlands Trace ancestry with Clans O’Neill, Ross, and Munro, is a sept (smaller clan within a larger clan) and can claim allegiance with all of these clans Progenitor of MacColloch Clan, Sir Cullo O’Neill of the 14th century Vi et animo: Vi et animo Motto: Vi et animo Literally means, “I live and breathe” Some members of the clan translate it to “By strength and Courage”Highland Dancing: Highland Dancing Highland dances are connected with ancient Scottish folk customs The Highland dances are performed solo Highland Dances were originally danced by men only, but now they're performed by far more females than males Dance steps are standardized by the Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing (SOBHD) and competitions are held world-wide Traditionally, Highland Dancing and Scottish National Dancing competitions are done to bagpipes.
