Candace Whittemore Lovely - Biography Renowned artist Candace Whittemore Lovely uses her work to represent her romantic vision and technical ability. Whether painting treasured American landscapes or people at work and at play, Impressionist Candace Whittemore Lovely presents a pleasing view of contemporary life. Her inspiration and technique come from the masters and traditions of The Boston School, America's oldest continuing school of painting. It is a philosophy based on sound drawing, sensitivity to line and values, and an impressionistic observation of light and color. Lovely began her distinguished career as an American Impressionist after becoming captivated by the work of Winslow Homer during her studies at the University of Vermont. She spent her early years developing as a painter with the masters of The Boston School, the school that developed our first American Impressionists such as Frank Benson, Joseph DeCamp, and Edmond Tarbell. Since 1980, she has studied with prominent artists such as Robert Cormier and Paul Ingbretson of that school. Since her studies she has won numerous awards and distinctions for her artwork. Internationally respected art dealer James Bakker and The Boston Globe have called Lovely “the Grand Dame of Boston painters.” Her paintings have been featured in Cape Cod Life, Yankee Magazine, Hilton Head Monthly, and Pink Magazine. Her works also appear in a variety of books including Realism in Revolution: The Art of the Boston School (1985) and Interior Visions (1988). The New York Graphic Society and Kennedy Studios have reproduced many of her paintings as prints and posters for an international audience. In 1991, Lovely painted the official portrait of First Lady Barbara Bush. Lovely is a distinguished member of several art organizations including The Copley Society of Boston, America’s oldest art association, where she was accorded the designation “Copley Master.” She has been voted one of the University of Vermont’s most prominent alumni and is a member of the Forman School Hall of Fame. Lovely maintains a studio on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina where she lives with her husband J. Rodger Horsey and her West Highland white terrier Lily.
