7-I History of the Internet : History of the Internet During the Cold War the US needed global communication without the use of mail or telephone, so the Defense Advance Research Projects Agency (DARPA) decided to work on ARPANET
J.C.R. Licklider created the ARPANET as a computer program for computers which can connect and communicate with other computers globally. The Internet’s Development Timeline : The Internet’s Development Timeline 1957 - October 4th - the USSR launches Sputnik, the first artificial earth satellite.
1958 - February 7th - In response to the launch of Sputnik, the US Department of Defense issues directive 5105.15 establishing the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA). Slide 4: In 1962, Dr. J.C.R. Licklider was chosen to head ARPA's research in improving the military's use of computer technology. Licklider was a visionary who sought to make the government's use of computers more interactive.
1969 -- Birth of Internet
1971 -- People communicate over a network. E-mail invented a program to send messages across a distributed network. Slide 5: 1972-Computers can connect more freely and easily. First public demonstration of ARPANET between 40 machines
1983- The Internet gets bigger. Slide 6: The events that happened after 1983 was that the Internet became a free public program that can be used in any computer.
