TRADE UNION : INTRODUCTION Over the years, trade union has emerged as an essential features of industry in every country. The main reason for their emergence is the factory system and capitalistic society. In the early stages of industrialization , there was lack of legal protection for workers. The workers felt exploited at the hand of the employers. They joined hands to protect their interest through collective action. A trade union is an organized expression of the needs, attitudes and expectation of the workers. A trade union has many facets – economic, social, political. It strives to protect, maintain, and improve economic, social and vocational interest of their members.

Definition: A trade union means an association of workers in one or more profession, i.e. an association carried but mainly for the purpose of protecting and advancing the members economic interest in connection with daily works. Characteristics of Trade Unions : Trade union is an association of employers, employees or independent workers. The main aim of a trade union is to protect and further the economic, vocational and other interest of their members. Members of trade union have common interests and problems, which motivate them to unite. Trade union always act collectively i.e. through united actions of members. Trade unions is generally a permanent combination.

WHY WORKERS JOIN UNIONS ? The workers join union to get economic security. They want steady employment and proper income. The union take up the issue of lay offs or wage increases for workers with management and protect the interest of their members. The unions protect workers and restrain management from taking any action which is irrational, discriminatory or prejudicial to the interest of labors. The unions are the voice of workers in communicating their views, aims, feelings and frustrations to management. The unions provide protection to workers against economic hazards such as accidents, illness, death, disability etc.
