History of Advertisement By Ben Robinson

When advertising began:

When advertising began Advertising as a discrete form is generally agreed to have began in newspapers in the early 17 th century, this included line or classified advertising

Line advertising:

Line advertising Original line marketing was just basic advertising. This means a brief description of the product for sale.

Classified advertising:

Classified advertising Classified advertising is generally grouped with publications under headings, classifying the product or service being offered.

An example of an early advert:

An example o f an early advert A successful story of advertising is Pear’s soap. Thomas Barret took images of fine art which were cherubs and used them to promote the quality of the brand.

18th century adverts:

18th century adverts The 18th century adverts were public announcements made by vendors. Later people started to add ‘large type’ and ‘illustrations’ to get attention. Many images of run away slaves were used as advertisements, there were very little regulations at this time.

18th and 19th century adverts:

18th and 19th century adverts Political cartoons were extremely influential. A cartoonist named Thomas Nast managed to get a politician called William Tweed, fired from his job and put in jail. Most people believed facts from newspapers, so it gave cartoonists to expose people as there were so few regulations. Typical cartoonists displayed racism and ridiculed people in public jobs such as politicians.

19th Century adverts:

19th Century adverts A popular type of advert at this time was called ‘Broadside’ these were single sheets printed to use on walls and fences. These were printed in black ink and large font rather than illustrations. These were used to advertise anything.

20th century adverts:

20th century adverts In the first part of the 20th century advertising took advantage of the new mass media by using cinema then radio. In the 1950’s, television became the biggest consumer property in America and adverts started showing millions of people that buying products increased lifestyle. Regulations regarding advertisements changed dramatically. Advertising has become a huge marketing event which affects most peoples lives.

Advertisement in the First World War:

Advertisement in the First World War In WW1 the British Government used advertisements as propaganda to convince its citizen’s to fight and also it persuaded the Americans to join the battle.
