ZACHARIAH: 

ZACHARIAH Zachariah is the cook on the ship. He is the oldest member of the crew and the only African American onboard. Zachariah offered to be Charlotte’s “final friend.” Zachariah was beaten by Captain Jaggery, but he survived and was hidden on the ship by the crew. BACK TO CHARACTER MENU

THE FIRST MATE: 

THE FIRST MATE Mr. Hollybrass is the first mate. He sympathized with the crew, but still followed Captain Jaggery’s orders and whipped Zachariah. BACK TO CHARACTER MENU

THE SECOND MATE: 

THE SECOND MATE Mr. Keetch was the original second mate, but after he sided with the crew during the mutiny, he was demoted. Captain Jaggery chose Mr. Johnson to replace Mr. Keetch as the second mate. BACK TO CHARACTER MENU

MR. CRANICK: 

MR. CRANICK Mr. Cranick was a member of Captain Jaggery’s original crew. After he tied a knot wrong, Jaggery chopped his arm off. Mr. Cranick snuck onto the ship during the second voyage and led the mutiny against Captain Jaggery. BACK TO CHARACTER MENU

MR. GRUMMAGE: 

MR. GRUMMAGE Mr. Grummage escorts Charlotte to the Seahawk. Mr. Grummage refuses to let Charlotte return to her teacher, Miss Weed, and forces her to board the ship. Charlotte never sees Mr. Grummage again. BACK TO CHARACTER MENU

MR. CRANICK: 

MR. CRANICK Mr. Cranick is the stowaway on the Seahawk. He hides in the brig of the ship until leading the mutiny against Captain Jaggery. BACK TO CHARACTER MENU

RIGGING: 

RIGGING Rigging is the ropes that sailors use to raise the sails. When Charlotte is climbing the sails, she slips, gets tangled in the ratlines, and hangs upside-down 50 feet in air. BACK TO VOCABULARY MENU

FORECASTLE: 

FORECASTLE The forecastle is the area of the ship where the crew sleeps. No one besides the crew is allowed in the forecastle: not even Captain Jaggery. Charlotte finds a pistol and a round robin while fetching a needle for Mr. Ewing in the forecastle. BACK TO VOCABULARY MENU

BRIG: 

BRIG The brig is the ship’s jail, which is located inside of the ship. When Charlotte goes beneath the deck to find her clothes, she sees a face in the brig. Mr. Cranick was able to sneak onto the ship and stay in the brig as a stowaway. BACK TO VOCABULARY MENU

SECOND MATE: 

SECOND MATE On a ship, second mates are in charge of navigation. They steer the ship. BACK TO VOCABULARY MENU

DECREPIT: 

DECREPIT Decrepit is an adjective that means old, infirm, and feeble. Some of your example sentences were: The toy was decrepit because it had only one arm. My shoes are three years old, so they are falling apart and decrepit. My grandmother is so decrepit she cannot lift the couch. BACK TO VOCABULARY MENU

RATLINES: 

RATLINES Ratlines are like stair-steps. The crew uses them to climb to the top of the sails, 130 feet high. Charlotte, when trying out for the crew, climbs the ratlines. BACK TO VOCABULARY MENU

WHO GAVE CHARLOTTE THE DIRK? Zachariah gave Charlotte the dirk to use for protection. Charlotte tried to give the dirk to Captain Jaggery, but he also asked her to keep it for protection. Charlotte claimed that Mr. Grummage gave her the dirk. BACK TO PLOT MENU
