1961 The Borovansky Ballet Company finally disbands and is supplanted a year later by the Australian Ballet. In NSW, the last Electric Tram Service runs in Sydney and the Parkes Radio Telescope is officially opened. In South Australia, a German immigrant called Wolfgang Blass arrives in search of making sparkling wines and Sturt ’ s Desert Pea is declared the state ’ s official floral emblem. Huge bushfires ravish the southwest of Western Australia. In Tasmania, Kenneth Gillespie founded Tasmanian Ballet,later re-named the Tasmanian Ballet Company .

1961 In Queensland, the Queensland Arts Council is formed and Australia ’ s first commercial oil field is established in Moonie. In Victoria, Hawthorn wins the VFL Grand Final; Lord Fury wins the Melbourne Cup and the infamous Sir Henry Bolte is still State Premier. (1908-1990) The Miles Franklin Award is won by Patrick White ’ s “ Riders in the Chariot ” . Patrick White (1912-1990) Our Australian of the Year is announced: Dame Joan Sutherland . And Johnny O ’ Keefe ’ s version of Elvis Presley ’ s “ I ’ m Counting On You ” is the biggest selling Australian single.

The only Australian feature film to be produced was a surf movie called Bungala Boys . Consider Your Verdict, Four Corners , Whiplash, Revue ’ 61, The Magic of Music And The Johnny O ’ Keefe Show are first aired on Australian television. 1961 Australia defeats England at home 2-1 and retains the Ashes. (b.1938) Rod Laver wins the Men ’ s Singles Final at Wimbledon. Bob Dyer of “ BP Pick-A-Box ” fame wins the Gold Logie.
