Slide10 : Lecture 2. Enlarging the European Union The European Union has been enlarging ever since it was created at the beginning of the 1950s. Since then the Union has growth from the initial six members to the current 15 through a series of enlargements. Any European State, which respects the principles of liberty, democracy, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, and the rule of law, may apply to become a member of the Union.   Treaty on European Union (article 49) In the beginning of the 21st century the process of enlargement is considered to be the main goal and a historic task for the Union so that the integration of the continent could be continued further by peaceful means, extending a zone of stability and prosperity. So the process of integration and adoption of new members is still continuing. The success of the EU and the values it is based on attracts other new countries to become a member of the Union. At present there are thirteen

Fifth and Sixth Framework Programmes The Fifth Framework Programme (FP5) constitutes the priorities for the European Union's research, technological development and demonstration (RTD) activities for the period 1998-2002. These priorities have been chosen on the basis of a number of common criteria reflecting the major concerns of the quality of life for European citizens and increasing industrial competitiveness. The FP5 is aimed to help solve problems and to respond to the major socio-economic challenges facing Europe. By focusing on a limited number of research areas combining technological, industrial, economic, social and cultural aspects the FP5 maximizes its impact. This program provides a coherent and truly European framework for supporting research and technological development as part of Community research policy and constitutes a four-year strategic plan for the period 1999-2002. During this period, it will stimulate transnational collaboration in research, particularly between industry and universities, and the establishment of networks of excellence. A budget of 13 700 million euro has been agreed for European Community FP5. Combined with 1 260 million euro for Euratom FP5 the budget for 1999-2002 Framework Program is 14960 million euro.

Collaborative Browsing in Information Resources - Tools and Services (CoBrow) : Collaborative Browsing in Information Resources - Tools and Services (CoBrow) CoBrow goals  -        bring together users of the WWW  -        provide Virtual Presence in the Web (i.e. Web-users are able to see each other on Web-pages)  -        let people communicate on such locations


Slide14 : VPS architecture Virtual Presence System (VPS) VPS goals   -        let people meet on Virtual Locations like Web URL, a web page/site, GPS coordinates, a chat room and so on. Otherwise people on such locations are unaware of each other. Virtual Presence enables people to communicate and allows to work together on such locations -        bring together neighborhood information delivered by the VPS (which user has opened which shared document or which user reside at which location) with static user information or user properties like a users name, postal address or phone number or as well the URL of a users video conferencing system endpoint.
