Slide2 : Relationships with peers can include both negative peer pressure and positive peer support. Let’s look at each of these individually!


Slide3 : NEGATIVE PEER PRESSURE Write down in your journal what you think the definition is. Definition: Negative peer pressure is influence from other people that may persuade you to take dangerous risks or make bad decisions.


Slide4 : Mike has been friends with Frank and Dalton for a few years. They are all freshmen now and Frank just got his driver’s license. While in the neighborhood, one day Dalton notices a garage door open with three bikes inside. Dalton and Frank want to stop and take them. Mike doesn’t really want to do this. How can he get out of this situation? Write in your journal. EXAMPLE ONE


Slide5 : EXAMPLE TWO Brandi is at a party with her friends. She has been at these parties before and there’s always alcohol and drugs being used. Her friends are beginning to tease her about not joining in. Brandi does not want to lose her friends but does not want to use drugs or alcohol. What should she do? Write in your journal.

Slide7 : POSITIVE PEER PRESSURE Write down in your journal what you think the definition is. Definition: Friends that inspire you to do worthy projects and refrain from negative activities.


Slide8 : EXAMPLE ONE Patrick has some spare time this weekend. His friends Lisa and Bob are going to be working at a local park on a clean-up project. On the way, they stop by Patrick’s house to talk him into coming with them. What positive actions could result? Write in your journal.

Slide10 : To Summarize... •Peer pressure can be positive or negative. •Outside sources can be used to help you make the right decisions. •If someone is trying to get you to do something you don’t want to do, don’t do it. •Use the decision making process before acting in a situation.
