Renewable Energy in West Africa:

Dr. Ibrahim Togola Renewable Energy in West Africa

Energy access in Africa:

Energy access in Africa Population andgt; 800 million, 80% live in Subsaharan Africa 50% African people live in rural area 500 millions African people don't have Access to electricity representing 64% of the population As result, lack of many potential economical activities in rural and peri urban areas

Slide3:

Very low access to modern energy services This situation makes efforts for development very difficult. ECOWAS policy: poverty reduction is a major concern. Electricity access in ECOWAS zone is 20%

Slide4:

Options for increasing Energy Access for W. African Generate More Energy Improve distribution Reduce Demand

Slide5:

Current modern energy supply make-up in West Africa Electricity is a catalyst for economic development All countries do their best to increase access as it is essential to attain the UN MDGs Actual efforts for development of energy sector are mainly based on oil products (i.e. pipeline Nigeria – Ghana, etc.) Most West African countries import this oil Electricity consumption per capita has dropped from 431kWh to 112 kWh from 1980 to 2000 The new rural electrification programs in different countries in the region are not promoting Renewable

Many countries elaborated their renewable energy strategy and action plan (Mali, Senegal, Niger, Burkina Faso, Ghana); White paper on energy is elaborated; Since 2005, Many West African countries considered the cross cutting nature of energy and established the Multistakeholder Committee on Energy; Many countries launched the rural electrification program mainly funded by the World Bank and on energy neutral source basis; Considering Africa’s poor level of economic development, it is essential to give priority to the use of indigenous natural resources for modern energy supply Different initiatives promoting renewable energy globally should support Africa in this direction with concrete measures.
