Christopher Columbus Reason for Exploring Thought that Japan and the Indies were much closer than they are. “Enterprise of the Indies.” Explore a new route to the East Indies (Spice Islands). Would become Governor of any lands discovered. Keep 10% of wealth discovered.

His 2st Voyage:

His 2 st Voyage Columbus left Cadiz on 24 September 1493. to find new territories, with 17 ships carrying supplies, and about 1,200 men to colonize the region. On 3 November 1493, Columbus sighted a rugged island that he named Dominica (Latin for Sunday); later that day, he landed at Marie-Galante, which he named Santa Maria la Galante.

His 3rd Voyage:

His 3 rd Voyage On 30 May 1498, Columbus left with six ships from Sanlúcar, Spain, for his third trip to the New World. From 4 August through 12 August he explored the Gulf of Paria which separates Trinidad from Venezuela. Columbus returned to Hispaniola on 19 August to find that many of the Spanish settlers of the new colony were discontented, having been misled by Columbus about the supposedly bountiful riches of the new world.

His 4th Voyage:

His 4 th Voyage Columbus made a fourth voyage nominally in search of the Strait of Malacca to the Indian Ocean. on 11 May 1502, with the ships Capitana , Gallega , Vizcaína and Santiago de Palos . He sailed to Arzila on the Moroccan coast to rescue Portuguese soldiers whom he had heard were under siege by the Moors. In Panama, Columbus learned from the natives of gold and a strait to another ocean.

Christopher Columbus Discoveries/Outcomes Explored Cuba and Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic) Met Native Americans (Taino) and traded gold with them. Returned to Palos on March 15 th . Made three more voyages to explore the Caribbean region. 1493-1496, 1498-1500, 1502-1504

Christopher Columbus Opinion Did not “discover” America since many native peoples were already there. Maybe they came from Asia Maybe Vikings and other sailors came before him. Started commerce between Europe and Americas Was an excellent sailor and explorer. Thankyou.!!!
