Gondia Education Society's C.J. Patel College, Tirora , Dist.- Gondia 441911. Subject : FLUVIAL GEOMORPHOLOGY Topic Channel Pattern Is presented by Dr. Nanabhau S. Kudnar M.A., B.Ed., SET, NET, Ph.D., M.B.A . Head, Department of Geography C.J . Patel College Tirora .

CHANNEL:

Definition:- Channel represents water course of a river confined within the limits of valley walls or elevated land on both side. CHANNEL

CHANNEL PATTERN:

The channel pattern is a meant of configuration of a river as it would appear from sky. OR The river channel pattern is a meant of configuration of a river as it would appear from an airplane. CHANNEL PATTERN

CRITERIAS FOR CLASSIFICATION OF CHANNEL PATTERN:

Sinuosity:- Sinuosity is the ratio between channel length (CL) and valley length( VL). The channel length is determined along the channel between two point on a river ,and valley length is the straight line distance between same two points. Formula :- Sinuosity index (SI)= CL/VL CRITERIAS FOR CLASSIFICATION OF CHANNEL PATTERN

Slide6:

Channel Stability Number of Channel Slope –Discharge Relation Width-Depth Ratio

Types of Channel Patterns:

STRAIGHT CHANNEL :- Channel are defined as straight when sinuosity index is less than1.05. A geometrically straight river channel is rare .except where the headwater stream is firmly held on the line of fault. In natural system straight channel may be possible upto the stretch of 100 mtr or so. Types of Channel Patterns

:

MEANDERING CHANNEL:

A stream channel having sinuosity index more than 1.5 is defined as meandering channel and is the most common channel pattern to be found any where along the longitudinal course of a river mainly alluvial rivers . The meandering channel is characterized by pools at the bend and riffles at the cross over of the river course . MEANDERING CHANNEL

BRAIDED CHANNEL:

A braided channel pattern is characterize by multiple channels. Where in these channelways are divided by bars and islands and are always shifting within highly erodible river banks . The characteristics of braided channel pattern include unstable bars and islands ;temporal changes in their the degree of can be expressed by the percentage of reach length that is divided by number of bars. Braided index(BI) =2(sum of the length of island or bar) length of reach BRAIDED CHANNEL

ANABRANCHING PATTERN:

Anabranching channel pattern is one where the anabranching rejoin the original trunk or unite with next neighbouring trunk ,some times after a distance of ten of miles . Anabranching means offshoot of stream which rejoins the trunk or tributary streams . ANABRANCHING PATTERN
