Scandals And Scams In Indian Politics And Measures To Prevent Them 2G SPECTRUM Scam Adarsh housing society CWG Scam Satyam Scandal

What is a SCAM?:

What is a SCAM? Normally the dictionary defines scam as a fraud way to earn profit by some bad people.

Scam ( A regular feature to be seen in India ):

Scam ( A regular feature to be seen in India ) Indian Politics is quite diverse and just like every organization, has its pros and cons. But as the Government Of INDIA is not so strict therefore we hear about scandals often. Corruption has ignited this process all the more. Actually corruption is the main reason why chaos is widespread in our beautiful and culture rich country.

2G SPECRTUM Scam ******** :

2G SPECRTUM Scam ******** ~~A deep insight~~ It is related to the licenses given to the various Telecom companies at a very under-priced value which incurred huge losses to the exchequer. Almost 122 licenses were issued to 85 companies. The companies included Vodafone Essar, TATA Teleservices, Reliance Communications, Virgin Mobile, Loop Mobile, etc.

Slide 5:

The Comptroller and Auditor General holds Raja personally responsible for the sale of 2G spectrum at 2001 rates in 2008, resulting the previously mentioned loss of up to Rs. 1.76 lakh crores (US$40 billion) to the national exchequer. In August, 2010, evidence was submitted by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) showing that Raja had personally signed and approved the majority of the questionable allocations. A famous image of this scam. A. Raja

Slide 6:

In early November 2010 Telecom Minister A Raja resigned. In mid November the comptroller Vinod Rai issued show-cause notices to Unitech, S Tel, Loop Mobile, Videocon, and Etisalat to respond to his assertion that all of the 85 licenses granted to these companies did not have the up-front capital required at the time of the application and were in other ways illegal. Some media sources have speculated that these companies will receive large fines but not have their licenses revoked, as they are currently providing some consumer service. In response to the various allegations, the Govt of India has replaced the then incumbent Telecom minister, A. Raja with Kapil Sibal who has taken up this charge in addition to being the Union minister for Human Resources Development.Mr Sibal contends that the "notional" losses quoted are a result of erroneous calculations and insists that the actual losses are nil.

Slide 7:

The CBI conducted raids on Raja and four other telecom officials - former telecom secretary Siddharth Behura, Raja's personal secretary R K Chandolia, member telecom K Sridhar and DoT deputy director general A K Srivastava on 8 December 2010.

Adarsh Housing Society Scam:

Adarsh Housing Society Scam The Adarsh Housing Society is a cooperative society in the city of Mumbai in India. It was reserved for the war widows and veterans of the Kargil War. ~~The Policy Destroyer~~

Slide 9:

In 2010, the Indian media brought to public the alleged violations of rules at various phases of construction in the Adarsh Society. Questions were raised on the manner in which apartments in the building were allocated to bureaucrats, politicians and army personnel who had nothing to do with Kargil War. The real culprit????? And the way in which clearances were obtained for the construction of the building of the Adarsh Society. The Adarsh society high-rise was constructed in the Colaba locality of Mumbai, which is considered a sensitive coastal area by the Indian Defense forces and houses various Indian Defense establishments.

CWG Scam:

CWG Scam ~~The King of all Scams~~ The Commonwealth Games is an international, multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. As well as many Olympic sports, the Games also include some sports that are played mainly in Commonwealth countries, such as lawn bowls, rugby sevens and netball.

Slide 11:

The Commonwealth Games was severely criticized by several prominent Indian politicians and social activists because billions of dollars have been spent on the sporting event despite the fact that India has one of the world's largest concentration of poor people. Additionally, several other problems related to the 2010 Commonwealth Games have been highlighted by Indian investigative agencies and media outlets; these include — serious corruption by officials of the Games' Organizing Committee, delays in the construction of main Games' venues, infrastructural compromise, possibility of a terrorist attack, and exceptionally poor ticket sales before the event. ~~ The Down Side :( ~~

Slide 12:

Many blames were put on the organizing committee during these games. The most heightened blame was that billions of rupees were used up in these games by Suresh Kalmadi who was the head of Organizing Committee. Spending such a huge amount is useless because India has many other priorities that needs to be fulfilled before organizing a huge event. Since the work for the commonwealth games started it has been a center of controversies. This event was highly criticized when it seemed that the construction work will not be able to complete by the specified date. Labour laws have also been defied. Making children to work on various sites which violates child labor law and by paying the workers less than the minimum wage of Rs152 in Delhi city which is a violation of Minimum Wages Act. Suresh Kalmadi

Satyam Scandal ~~A good example of Bankruptcy~~:

Satyam Scandal ~~ A good example of Bankruptcy~~ The Satyam Computer Services Scandal is almost at par with the Enron Scandal that shook The United States in the year 2001. The Satyam Scandal was publicly announced on 7 January 2009, when Chairman Ramalinga Raju confessed that Satyam's accounts had been falsified. Satyam's shares fell to 11.50 rupees on 10 January 2009, their lowest level since March 1998, compared to a high of 544 rupees in 2008. In New York Stock Exchange Satyam shares peaked in 2008 at US$ 29.10; by March 2009 they were trading around US $1.80

Slide 14:

The Indian Government has stated that it may provide temporary direct or indirect liquidity support to the company. However, whether employment will continue at pre-crisis levels, particularly for new recruits, is questionable On 22 January 2009, CID told in court that the actual number of employees is only 40,000 and not 53,000 as reported earlier and that Mr. Raju had been allegedly withdrawing INR 20 crore rupees every month for paying these 13,000 non-existent employees

Measures To Check These Issues:

Measures To Check These Issues Jan Lokpal Bill → The Lokpal will be a three-member body with a chairperson who is or was a chief justice or Supreme Court judge, and two members who are or have been high courts judges or chief justices. Implementation of the Lokpal bill will hopefully reduce corruption in India. The basic idea of the Lokpal is borrowed from the office of the ombudsman in other countries. It provides for filing complaints of corruption against the prime minister , other ministers and members of parliament with the ombudsman. Anyone, except for a public servant , can file a complaint and the Lokpal has to complete the inquiry within six months.

Slide 16:

India Against Corruption (IAC) → India Against Corruption (IAC) is a people's movement to demand comprehensive reforms of anti-corruption systems in India. Several eminent citizens have come together to force the Government of India to enact the Jan Lokpal Bill. This initiative is supported by almost every citizen of India including religious leaders, right to information activists, social reformers and bureaucrats.
