FDR transferred U.S. fleet to Pearl Harbor Why? Deterrent to Japanese aggression Japan was desperate for rich minerals and oils. Result U.S. expected Japan to attack Indies + Philippines Unanticipated attack on the east Slide 6: Who? Japan (unfairly) vs. U.S. Where? Pearl Harbor- located in Hawaii When? Dec. 7, 1941 Why? Japan needed to remove U.S. from being a threat as they continued to advance Results? U.S. enter WWII Slide 7: How? Base accessible by planes Japanese navy aircraft carrier force Much aerial striking power The USS Arizona after being hit by Japanese bomb Slide 8: Attack centered around 6 heavy aircraft carriers 24 supporting vessels 5 submarines 420 planes Most powerful force to ever be seen in the oceans Slide 9: Within a short time period, 5 of 8 battleships were sunk or sinking Rest were damaged USS Utah after being torpedoed 2 Hours Later… : 2 Hours Later… USN sailor after the attacks Losses 2 USN battleships 2 destroyers 188 aircrafts Roughly 2400 killed Damages Almost 1200 wounded 3 cruisers 6 battleship 1 destroyer 159 aircraft Slide 12: Japanese losses were light 29 planes (less than 10%) failed to return It was a success for Japan, but the fight was not over Japanese army did make it to shores of Malaya Slide 13: The attack ended only 2 hours after it began!!! Slide 14: America was able to repair and build about 3 ships that had not been damaged fully. : More importantly, the shock and anger caused by the surprise attack united a divided nation and was translated into a wholehearted commitment to victory in World War II.
