Slide 2: A functioning system of government “Ruled by the Governed.” -Plato Slide 3: We are a Democracy. Democracy depends on our choice. Democracy is created when we decide to rule or govern ourselves. We organize to decide the functions of our government and how it is ruled. In other words we create a structure which we allow to govern—a structure that functions to govern us. Talcott Parsons would say that we are within a structure, and that structure is a system. A system that has evolved into a self propagating infrastructure—a box. A box in which society’s goals, rules, and boundaries our created through the actions and functions of the system, or more specifically the systems within the system. Democracy is that system. That System Is Slide 4: We are a Democracy. Democracy depends on our choice. Democracy is created when we decide to rule or govern ourselves. We organize to decide the functions of our government and how it is ruled. In other words we create a structure which we allow to govern—a structure that functions to govern us. But, it is also a model which Parsons theorizes we have created to function all on its own by meeting the needs of the societal structure. For better or worse, for the few and the masses, Democracy exist through our own need to function in a system. Democracy is that System.
