Outline The Chinese STAR Collaboration Recent results TOFr Proposal 2004 plan Thanks

The Chinese STAR Collaboration:

The Chinese STAR Collaboration University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) Tsinghua University Shanghai Institute of Nuclear Research (SINR,CAS) Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP,CAS), Beijing Institute of Particle Physics (IOPP), Central China Normal University (CCNU) Institute of Modern Physics (IMP,CAS), Lanzhou Project Leader: Wenqing Shen (SINR) Deputy Leaders: Hongfang Chen (USTC) Kejun Kang (Tsinghua) Huanzhong Huang (UCLA) Contact person: Xiaolian Wang (USTC)

The Chinese STAR Collaboration:

The Chinese STAR Collaboration 1999 As a member of STAR collaboration CCNU and IHEP started TOFp R&D. 2000 Feb. A delegation of NSFC visited BNL. An agreement for scientific collaboration on RHIC physics between NSFC and BNL was signed. It supports Chinese scientists to participate in RHIC experiments. 2000 July The first Workshop on MRPC R&D was held at Beijing CCAST. 2000 Aug. USTC started MRPC R&D with special director’s fund from NSFC, as well as the support from nuclear society in China and assistance from the STAR collaboration, CERN ALICE group, Rice University and other Chinese STAR groups.

The Chinese STAR Collaboration:

The Chinese STAR Collaboration 2001 May The first meeting of Chinese groups was held at USTC, Hefei. The Chinese STAR group was established. 2001 Oct. The Chinese STAR group was accepted by the STAR collaboration and participated in STAR data taking and analysis. 2001 Oct. The STAR China-U.S. collaboration was included in the PRC/U.S. Cooperative Program in High Energy Physics “In Particular, the Committee heard the plans for Chinese participation in the Time of Flight particle identification system for the STAR detector at RHIC.”。

The Chinese STAR Collaboration:

The Chinese STAR Collaboration 2002 June The STAR management (Tim Hallman and Jay Marx) visited National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the Chinese STAR groups. The STAR TOF upgrade is a high priority project for the China-STAR collaboration. 2002 Aug 24-31 A summer school and workshop on ‘QCD and RHIC Experimental Physics Program’ was held at Beijing with support from NSFC, CCAST and USTC. 15 STAR & PHENIX speakers, ~100 Chinese participants. 2003 Oct 4-5 and 6-8 School of STAR physics for students and STAR regional meeting at HeFei 2003 Oct 11-12 and 13 Workshop on STAR Physics at CCAST and Discussion of the STAR management and NSFC at Beijing

Highlight of 2002:

Highlight of 2002 Chinese STAR Collaboration mastered the Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) detector technology (USTC and Tsinghua). 2) STAR constructed a full scale TOF tray module using mostly MRPCs provided by the USTC group. Beam testing results from the BNL-AGS show excellent performance of the Chinese MRPCs. 3) The full scale prototype module (TOFr Tray) was installed in the STAR detector and successfully operated in d+Au and p+p collisions during 2002 run providing important new scientific results. Physics analysis results by the Chinese group have been submitted to PRL for publication.

Highlight 2002 and 2003 :

Highlight 2002 and 2003 4) Chinese group participated in the STAR physics running in 2001-2003 (USTC, CCNU and SINR). Chinese groups (IHEP, Tsinghua, CCNU) experienced serious visa problems! 5) Three Chinese students have received their Ph.D. degrees (CCNU, USTC) for their work on STAR physics and MRPC R&D. There are nine Chinese students from the Chinese STAR collaboration working on STAR now ( 5 – USTC, 3 – CCNU, 1 – SINR).

Highlight 2003:

Highlight 2003 6) 2003 March Chinese STAR group submitted a proposal of MRPC TOF for STAR and RHIC Physics program in China to the NSFC. 2003 July STAR collaboration submitted a TOF upgrade proposal to BNL-RHIC with informational copy to US-DOE. BNL Review in process; useful feedback received from US-DOE for formal submission to them in November after review by BNL 7) 2003 Aug.-Sep. 12 MRPCs have been built (Tsinghua and USTC) and sent to Rice. A new full-scale STAR TOF MRPC tray module will be constructed and installed for FY 2004 run. 8) 2003 Oct. A regional STAR collaboration meeting is going to be held at USTC, Hefei.

The Chinese Proposal:

The Chinese Proposal Three Sub-Groups: Mass Production: Tsinghua: 70% mass production Prof.Yuanjing Li USTC: 30% mass production Prof.Cheng Li Tsinghua University, Prof. Ke-Jun Kang Quality control of MRPC and calibration: USTC Prof. Xiao-Lian Wang Physics: Set up an analysis center and prepare for experimental data analysis SINR Prof. Yu-Gang Ma

Full TOF Related Physics of Chinese Group:

Full TOF Related Physics of Chinese Group Chinese groups will do the STAR physics program with the TOF upgrade. We will focus on Partonic collectivity. Use special particles to investigate the parton level collective dynamics. The particles could be omega, phi and charm meson. The quantities we look include elliptic flow and radial flow. Di-Omega search. Open charm production. Use open charm to look at initial gluon structure function, heavy quark dynamics including possible thermalization and heavy quark energy loss. Resonance physics.

The Proposal of RHIC-STAR Full TOF Construction:

The Proposal of RHIC-STAR Full TOF Construction Proposed major construction responsibilities: Chinese STAR Groups: MRPC Production – NSFC US STAR Groups: Electronics and Integration – DOE Monetary Contributions: China ~ US$2.5 M (US$ 1.2M from NSFC) US- DOE ~ US$4.5 M

Plan for Year 2004:

Plan for Year 2004 1) Continue improvement on MRPC mass production technique at USTC and Tsinghua. Setting up testing facilities for mass production. 2) Construction of a 4-tray STAR TOF MRPC subsystem with electronics developed for the full TOF. 3) Continuation of the Chinese participation in the RHIC-STAR scientific program. 4) Finalize MOU with the STAR collaboration on TOF upgrade project with visit to China by the STAR management. 5) Arrange 5-6 STAR speakers for a CCAST summer school on ‘QCD and RHIC Experimental Physics Program’.

US-China Collaboration:

US-China Collaboration With TOFr detector contribution from China, the Joint STAR-China collaboration is the FIRST major Chinese high energy nuclear physics collaboration with BNL. We request the US DOE and the NSFC to conduct and complete the scientific review process as soon as possible. An official approval of this TOF project before the next US-China HEP cooperation conference will be a milestone for this joint US-China RHIC STAR collaboration. China STAR TOF group needs two person-year for visit U.S. and two group visit from U.S to china for two weeks every year in next 5 years .
