In the olden days, salt was difficult to obtain, and so it was a highly valued trade item.
Until the twentieth century, salt was one of the prime movers of national economies and wars.
During many wars, salt has been a major factor in the outcome.

In war time, prisoners were treated badly.
Many were weak and starved.
Eventually many died due to poor nutrition and sanitary conditions.
As prisoners were deemed useless thus little salt were used in their diet.
Muscles cramp and dizziness were experienced by the prisoners.
