FLOWER POWER EXPERIMENT DANIELA ORTIZ-MIRON MELISSA MONTALVAN GABRIELA MOLINA CHEMISTRY 11-7

INTRODUCTION :

We placed 4 flowers of the same type (crane flowers) in 4 different cups. Each cup had a different substance; sugar, alka-seltzer, salt and one had no substance. We are going to see which flower survives the longest according to the substance it has. INTRODUCTION HYPOTHESIS The flower with the alka-seltzer will last longer.

BACKGROUND :

Alka-seltzer: C6H8O7(aq) + 3NaHCO3(aq) → 3H2O(l) + 3CO2(g) + Na3C6H5O7(aq).Its active ingredients are: aspirin, sodium hydrogen carbonate, citric acid. It can increase the diameter of the flowers vessels which carry the water up and it acts as an anti-inflammatory which helps the flower live longer. It can slow down the growth of fungi and bacteria because of the acid which change the Ph of the water. Sugar: C12H22O11 and it’s made of 2 simple sugars that are glucose and fructose. It can replace the lost nutrients the flowers have when they are cut. Since the flowers require carbohydrates then adding sugar to the water will give the flower its necessary sugars in the stems and leaves of the flower. When the carbohydrate level is low then the petals will wilt and be paler. This method doesn’t work for all flowers only for certain flowers it will work. BACKGROUND

Slide 4:

Salt: NaCl, when salt is added to the water of a flower it will give nutrients away and the flower will live longer. It equalizes the plant cell pressure, the higher salinity water the more the plant cells will be hydrated. It also doesn’t allow mold, bacteria and fungi to grow which allows the plant to have some type of protection and live longer.

EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN :

EQUIPMENT & MATERIALS USED: CUPS FLOWERS SUGAR SALT ALKA-SELTZER WATER PROCEDURE: GATHER MATERIALS GET AND LABEL CUPS (FLOWER #1-4) ADD ABOUT 250ML OF WATER IN EACH CUP ADD EACH SUBSTANCE WITH A SPATULA. (1 SUBSTANCE PER CUP) MIX SUBSTANCES WITH STIRRING ROD PLACE FLOWERS IN CUP EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN

CONCLUSIONS :

Salt is not good with flowers. It doesn’t help them grow. Sugar and aspirin are excellent with flowers. They lengthen the lifetime of the flowers and their colors don’t fade away. Although leaving them with just water doesn’t kill them, it doesn’t help them either. It’s better to use something to help them stay alive so they won’t decay. CONCLUSIONS
