Presentation Transcript
Slide 1:Variable—any letter that represents an unknown value or number.
Coefficient—any number that comes before the variable when being multiplied.
Expression—a mathematical sentence that involves THREE entities:
1. Numbers
2. Variables
3. Operation Symbols
Examples: 3x
m + 2
Equation—an expression WITH an equal sign.
Examples: 4m = 7
11x – 5 = 7 Make sure to put me AFTER the coefficient when multiplying! Make sure to put me BEFORE the addend when adding! Sorry! We don’t use Mr. anymore! He’s old news! 1-1Variables, Expressions & Equations
Slide 2:Write an expression for each phrase.
1. 4 more than a number
x + 4
2. The product of a number and 7
7m
3. The quotient of 11 and g
4. 22 less than a number r
r – 22
5. The difference of a number and 2
t – 2 Be careful! Anytime you see the words “less than”, it means to not only subtract, but to also SWITCH! Keep in the same order as it is given to you. Keep in the same order as it is given to you.
