The Saying (The learners will acquire vocabulary naturally and automatically). But is it true?

What needs to be taught?:

What needs to be taught? 1. Form 2. Grammar 3. collocation

Form:

Form In presenting new words T should give Ss the three Ss of the word: 1. The sound of the word. (pronunciation) 2. The sense of the word. (meaning) 3. The shape of the word. (spelling)

Grammar :

Grammar The grammar of a new word means whether the word: 1. verb 2. Noun 3. Adjective 4. Adverb 5. Preposition, etc

Collocation :

Collocation The collocation of particular items makes a particular combination right or wrong.

Approaches to Teaching Vocabulary:

Approaches to Teaching Vocabulary First the teacher has to identify the words to dealt with. He/She can ask Ss to underline the words that they already know. Then the teacher can get Ss to work in groups to compare their work. They can also see the words that their partners haven ’ t mark and explain them to each other. After that the T makes Ss guess the meaning of unmarked words. Finally the T can brings the class together and hear the results.

The Advantages of this approach:

The Advantages of this approach 1. It is tends to be morale boosting 2. It encourages students ’ cooperation and peer teaching. 3. It entails repeated exposure to the text and vocabulary through individual, group and teacher-led stages.

Grouping items into categories:

Grouping items into categories 1. Ad-hoc vocabulary 2. Passive Vocabulary 3. Active Vocabulary

Ad-hoc Vocabulary:

Ad-hoc Vocabulary These words are required to understand a particular text but they are likely to have limited utility outside the text.

Passive Vocabulary:

Passive Vocabulary These are the words which are likely to be encountered frequently in reading. The learner should be able to recognize them from the text but with seldom use of these words in his speech or writing.

Active Vocabulary:

Active Vocabulary They are the words that the learner requires to express himself/herself in speech and writing. The better command he or she over the active vocabulary the better in his or her expression.
