A breast MRI is a test that’s often used with women with higher chances of getting breast cancer. It’s also done after breast cancer is diagnosed to measure size and extent of the cancer. The breast MRI is not a substitute for a breast biopsy, which takes a sample of breast tissue for exam under a microscope. The MRIs can give false results, which can lead to more biopsies to confirm if the sample is cancerous or non-cancerous. Breast MRIs also can’t detect tiny specks of calcium, known as microcalcifications, which make up half of the cancers detected by mammography.

What conditions may make a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) inadvisable? Content Source: https://www.webmd.com/breast-cancer/qa/what-is-a-breast-magnetic-resonance-imaging-mri A breast MRI is safe. But it may not be a good option if you have conditions such as: Heart pacemaker Cerebral aneurysm clip Pregnancy Implanted insulin pump, narcotics pump, or implanted nerve stimulators ("TENS") for back pain Cochlear implant for hearing loss Implanted spine stabilization rods Severe lung disease

How safe is a breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)? Breast MRI is safe. People who have had heart surgery and people with the following medical devices can safely get an MRI scan: Content Source: https://www.webmd.com/breast-cancer/qa/what-is-a-breast-magnetic-resonance-imaging-mri Surgical clips or sutures Artificial joints Staples Most heart valve replacements Disconnected medication pumps Vena cava filters Brain shunt tubes for hydrocephalus

How long is the breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) test? Allow 1 1/2 hours for your breast MRI exam.
