Snapshot of eEpoch: Snapshot of eEpoch Summary of eEpoch objectives
eEpoch Consortium
Structure and phases of the project
Aim: Aim The aim of eEpoch is to demonstrate interoperable and secure smart card based digital identification systems, which provide the levels of trust and confidence necessary for citizens to interact digitally with their national and municipal administrations and other European institutions.
Purpose: Purpose To be a proof of concept for eESC
To be a showcase for benefits of interoperability
To be a proof that it can be done at European scale
eEpoch Objectives: eEpoch Objectives Establish a knowledge base for e-sign & e-transaction communities
Demonstrate the smart card technology capability of implementing a solution for secure and authenticated digital identity
Demonstrate the interoperability of the services and solutions according to the requirements of the users and the legal frameworks
Propose solutions to harmonise smart card infrastructures to support the interoperability accross sectors and countries
Disseminate the lessons learned and contribute to the promotion of smart cards
eEpoch Participants: eEpoch Participants 16 Organizations 7 Pilots

Non-technical aspects: Non-technical aspects Knowledge Research & Knowledge Base
Technical IOP Specifications
Knowledge Transfer
Non-technical Knowledge: Non-technical Knowledge WP1 is actively involved in developing the non-technical knowledge on interoperability in eEpoch. This non-technical knowledge is focussed on the functions of IAS, and its relation to the e-services as well as the IAS-data. The ‘e-services’ as such are no part of the eEpoch project, but a ‘connection mechanism’ between IAS and the e-service does belong the knowledge to be defined.
Knowledge Research (I): Knowledge Research (I) To establish the knowledge concerning pan European interoperability (IOP) on Identification, Authentication, and Signature (IAS), based on smart cards (e-Key)
To execute action research, in order to gain non-technical knowledge concerning IOP / IAS with e-Key
To exploit a knowledge portal on IOP / IAS (web site) for and on behalf of the eEpoch project
Knowledge Research (II): Knowledge Research (II) On-going data collection process
to know how pilots will arrange their IOP demonstrations.
To know the cross pilot test cases
Every pilot defines its interoperability relation to each of the other pilots.
It is the mission of eEpoch to assist the pilots in structuring the relations, based on the models as given in GIF.
Knowledge Research (III): Knowledge Research (III)
Action Research: Action Research Methodology to support the pilots on specific topics of research:
Cost saving in technology components
Business case by sharing generic IAS services
Assessment of the applicability of operational standards in IOP-situations
IOP Plans: IOP Plans Pilots are identifying:
e-Services they intend to make interoperable
Authentication levels they can offer to external e-service providers
IOP Scenarios
Demonstration agreements
Technical aspects: Technical aspects Technical IOP Specifications
Technical Specifications (I): Technical Specifications (I) An interoperable smart card application that provides Identification, Authentication and electronic Signature services (IAS) is being specified.
This application will be used by the different pilot sites throughout Europe.
The starting point for the specification are the GIF requirements.
Technical Specifications (II): Technical Specifications (II) According to this requirements and the special needs of the pilot sites a subset of the E-Sign K specification is defined.
This subset is enhanced by several features according to the requirements. These additional features are based upon the ISO/IEC 7816 standard wherever possible
Technical Specifications (III): Technical Specifications (III) Work done
Functional Mapping of GIF on E-Sign K
Generic IAS Application / System package based on E-Sign K
LOAD of APPLETS protocol
