NairSima AnchanDarshna Vora &Shreya Mukhopadhyay GEOTROPISM PLANT MOVEMENT MEANING? : MEANING? Earth In the direction So, the movement of the plant in the direction of gravity is called as GEOTROPISM. GEOTROPISM towards away from roots shoots Negative geotropism Positive geotropism PLANT SELECTED:SADAPHULI : PLANT SELECTED:SADAPHULI DAY- 1 : DAY- 1 Plant was kept in an inverted position between two bricks. Shoot was straight and no bending of the stem was seen. DAY- 2 : DAY- 2 No characteristic bending of shoot is seen. Slight upward curvature in the branches is seen. Length of the stem increased from 6” to 6.2” bend DAY- 3 : DAY- 3 Slight bending of the shoot upwards i.e. away from the gravity is seen. Length of the stem increased from 6.2” to 6.5” bend DAY- 4 &5 : The plant showed no further characteristic increase in length or bending of the stem against the gravity. DAY- 4 &5 DAY-6 : DAY-6 Roots were seen to be appearing at the surface, uprooting the soil roots coming out OBSERVATIONS : OBSERVATIONS INFERENCE : INFERENCE The plant while kept inverted, the stem started moving up against the gravity and the roots started moving towards the gravity. So, the stem is NEGATIVELY geotropic. So, the roots are POSITIVELY geotropic. Slide 11: IMPORTANCE OF GEOTROPISM Controls the direction of growth in roots, leaves and branches. provide firm anchorage for roots ensure the plant can get adequate supply of water & mineral salts Role of AUXINS : Role of AUXINS commonest plant hormone regulate growth & other physiological processes in plants produced by root tip / shoot tip they affect the elongation region of the tip GEOTROPISM IN ROOTS AND SHOOTS : GEOTROPISM IN ROOTS AND SHOOTS The root tip and shoot tip produces auxin which diffuse to the elongation region The auxin diffuse to the lower side due to gravity Root tip Shoot tip GEOTROPISM IN ROOTS AND SHOOTS : GEOTROPISM IN ROOTS AND SHOOTS High auxin concentration inhibits growth in root Low auxin concentration enhances growth in shoot In root, the lower side grows slower than the upper side In shoots, the upper side grows faster So, the root bends downward and the shoot bends upward EFFECT OF AUXIN ON PLANT PARTS : EFFECT OF AUXIN ON PLANT PARTS positive growth negative growth auxin concentration Growth of plant positive no effect negative positive CLINOSTAT : CLINOSTAT for control experiments contains a cork disc which can be set to rotate in a vertical or horizontal plane by a motor to make factors uniform (evenly distributed) BIBLIOGRAPHY : BIBLIOGRAPHY botit_botany_wisc_edu-images-130-Tropisms Geotropism Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.htm http--www_science-projects-resources http--www_alphadictionary_com-images.htm Slide 18: THANK YOU You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
