Reading: 

Reading 35 points (29 MC and 6 point Response to Reading Selection) 3 reading selections (Independent Reading and Paired Reading Selection) No linking text grades 4-8

Writing: 

Writing 20 points (10 MC and 6 point Writing from Knowledge and Experience and 4 point Peer Response to Student Writing Sample)

WHAT is “range finding”?: 

WHAT is “range finding”? Range finding is a process of matching writing samples to a rubric* to create scoring guides. Scoring guides clearly define the score points using examples of student responses for each of the representative levels. *Holistic score measures overall quality of writing.

Rubrics: 

Rubrics Reading Response to the Paired Reading Selections = 6 points Writing Knowledge and Experience = 6 points Peer Response to the Student Writing Sample = 4 points

Range Finding Goal: 

To create Scoring Guides, using Michigan standards, that are used for training future scorers. Range Finding Goal

WHO is involved in range finding?: 

WHO is involved in range finding? Michigan teachers participate in grade level committees (4 to 5 people). Training is provided by representatives from the Contractor (Pearson) and Michigan Department of Education personnel.

What does the training involve?: 

What does the training involve? In order to build continuity from year to year, sessions begin with a review of leveled, annotated papers, from the previous year.

Before meeting with scorers, the contractor selects representative papers from field testing for use in the training session. Training sets, arranged from low to high scores, are reviewed together in order to achieve consistency among the group. Practice Sets, randomly arranged, are scored individually and scores are shared with the group to check for consistency. Total number of papers used in process = 100 -120

When Does Range Finding Occur? Range Finding takes place after prompts have been field tested – usually during the summer.

Scoring of Operational Tests: 

Scoring of Operational Tests Begins immediately after training following fall testing Takes place at various testing sites across country Scorers trained on one grade level and only score one constructed response prompt One scorer with 20% “Read Behind” for accuracy purposes

Access to Constructed Response: 

Access to Constructed Response 2006: Schools sent CDs with all writing CRs; Reading CRs still available on secure site 2007: Plan is to have ALL CRs on CDs
