People grew grains like millet and rice. Animals were raised. These were the first people in China to keep written records. They kept records on bronze, shells, stones, and bones.Slide3: This dynasty was the longest dynasty. It started in 1027 B.C. In 800 years there were 2 periods. Western Zhou The people were farmers who grew wheat, rice, beans, and fruit. Farmers gave food and valuables to the king. Mostly woman harvested the crops. Woman were also in charge of silk which was important. Eastern Zhou It lasted from 770 B.C. -221 B.C. “The Golden Age” was it’s nickname. The economy thrived in this period. They had projects like flood control, irrigation, and canal building. People built huge walls to keep out nomadic or wandering people. Iron was used to make farm tools and weapons. Many people became scholars, teachers, and government officials. Slide4: It lasted from 206 B.C. -220 A.D. Present day Vietnam and Cambodia is as far as it stretched. The 1st Han ruler was a peasant named Han Gaozu. He lifted the ban on books. Wu di ruled from 141-87 B.C. He divided lands owned by princes and lords. Wu di also taxed imported and exported trade goods plus he built new roads. He valued contributions of scholars and teachers, Sima Qian wrote the first complete history book on China in this period. Ban Zhao continued Sima Qian’s work. Wu di was civil service. Officials had to take civil service exams to work for the government.Slide5: In 221 B.C. Shi Hungdi became the 1st emperor of this dynasty. He was divided by 36 provinces. Shi Hungdi made the government more centralized. The money, weights, and measurement systems were all standardized. The great wall was built. It took hundreds of years to build the great wall. Shi Huangdi punished anyone who criticized him. People were oppressed by Shi’s ruling so they revolted. The Qin dynasty ended after the emperor died. The Qin dynasty lasted only about 20 years.Slide6: They are clay warriors who guarded Shi Huangdi’s tomb. They are all arranged in battle formations to protect him in his after life. They all have different faces that were sculpted from real soldiers. It took 40 years to make all the warriors. They were important because they guarded the first emperor of China’s tomb.Slide7: The Chinese invented Porcelain. They also invented paper. Ink was also one of their inventions. Another one of their inventions is the noodles. The Chinese were the first to discover the rudder. They processed grain with bamboo machinery.Slide8: The Bronze Age was during the Shang dynasty. It was the period of time when tools and weapons were made out of bronze. We have some of the very first Chinese writing on bronze from the Shang dynasty. Bronze working entered China around 2000 B.C.Slide9: The Great Wall of China was built during the Qin dynasty. Emperor Qin instructed the building of it. It was built to keep intruders out. It wrapped around China and went for thousands of miles. The wall was built over 2000 years ago. It was over 5000 km long. 7.5 meters was as tall as it got.Slide10: The Silk Road went through northern China and across Asia to the Roman Empire. It was the only way to connect China to the rest of the world. The Silk Road was got it’s name from a German geographer named Ferdinand Freiherr von Richthafen. The overland link lost it’s importance when trade across the seas began to develop. The Silk Road is actually a simple name for a complex networkSlide11: Confucius was the first teacher in China. One of his ideas was “A mistake not corrected is a mistake.” Another one of his ideas was “Treat People how you want to be treated.” A third theory of his was “ A man should practice what he preaches, but a man should also preach what he practices.” His theories were about law, life, and the government. He is important because of all the things he taught people. Slide12: Confucianism is a social code of behavior. It honors ancestors and ancient rituals. These ideas stress the need to develop responsibility and moral character. One rule was that men could only display their archery skills on three hunts a year during the autumn, spring, and winter.Slide13: Daoism is The Way (to happiness). Like Confucianism it is not a religion. Unlike Confucianism Daoism is a philosophy. Daoists are firm believers in joy and laughter. They think if you think about things and look at life in a certain way you’ll be much happier. One saying is "A clever mind is not a heart.” Another is “There is more to knowing than just being correct.” A third one is “The wise know their limitations; the foolish do not.” You do not have the permission to view this presentation.
