Transports: Transports In many countries today transportation problems are a fact
One of Volvos core values is environment, and this include the use of sustainable transports

Project Example:R&D Project Proposal in EU6FP: RCI – Road Charging Interoperability: Project Example: R&D Project Proposal in EU6FP: RCI – Road Charging Interoperability Vision:
1) Open framework for road charging
It shall be possible to carry out any road charging or tolling transaction in Europe with one single:
terminal
contract (or a minimized number)
invoice (or a minimized number)
2) Contractual, operational, technical interoperability
To establish with all key players an open system architecture for road charging and tolling systems that is capable of establishing interoperability.
Objectives:
Define general framework
Specify contractual, operational, technical context
Demonstrate in different vehicles/environments:
Ability to carry out transactions
Ability to use a unique contract
Ability to generate a single invoice
RCI Project: Interoperable road charging at work - boundaries described in the data modules of the actual Service Provider: RCI Project: Interoperable road charging at work - boundaries described in the data modules of the actual Service Provider At location “a” the OBE will only….
monitor the data modules
run the required software
modules,
…of the actual local Service Provider.
When passing the boundary segment into the striped area the OBE will additionally monitor the (downloaded) needs of Service Provider ”b”.
RCI Project: Scope: RCI Project: Scope RCI involves a wide range of issues in 3 categories:
Procedural issues
Contractual issues
Technical issues
Key examples are:
trust centre
mobile enforcement (roadside)
payment clearing process of OBEs
tariff models
vehicle classes
operating data air interface to OBEs
privacy layout
revision capabilities
Security
mechanical outline of OBE
OBE test specification
air interface
back office interfaces, etc.

Preventive/ predictive maintenance
Safety technologies
Positioning technologies
Autonomous driving
Project Example:Traffic Measurement : Project Example: Traffic Measurement Volvo Technology is investigating techniques and methods for identifying trucks and trailers - as a base for further work such as analyzing traffic flows and goods flows.
Logistics & Supply Chain Integration: Logistics & Supply Chain Integration

Goods Identification and RFID within Transports & Logistics: Goods Identification and RFID within Transports & Logistics
RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) - Smart Tag Technology: RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) - Smart Tag Technology Smart Tag Technology:
Uses ”transponders” with electronic product codes that can be scanned by a wireless radio frequency “reader”.
Allows significant improvements in the tracking of products, components and materials - in production and across the value chain. RFID identifies individual items:
Tyres
Cargo & Goods
Axles
RFID tags are paper thin labels consists of:
Integrated chip
Integrated antenna
Passive tags or Active tags with (battery) power source
RFID Readers can “read” many tags:
Line of sight not required
Anti-collision prevents interference Source: MIT

Volvo project: RFID concepts in transport and production applications: Volvo project: RFID concepts in transport and production applications A technical and business focused Volvo project (Volvo Truck & Volvo Technology) is analyzing the benefits using RFID technology.
The project is analyzing RFID technology for:
Tracking of…
Products
Components
Materials
Vehicles
in production and across the value chain,
including in-bound material handling
Tracking of vehicles, carriers and goods within
the Freight & transport process.
Opportunities examined in ”5 key areas”:
Inbound logistics
Production
Outbound logistics
Freight & transport management
Services management
Goods, infrastructure and resources need to become intelligent – Not for ”control” – but to react on changes!Volvo is partner in a Research project within Intelligent Goods concept: Goods, infrastructure and resources need to become intelligent – Not for ”control” – but to react on changes! Volvo is partner in a Research project within Intelligent Goods concept Intelligent goods:
Are individually programmed and know where to go and what needs to be done
Find their own way through the supply chain
Instruct infrastructure independently and directly
Keep an invisible record of places they have been
Can communicate with other goods
RFID is the medium that enables the redistribution of intelligence ! Goods must follow an optimal route
to reach the right customer
in the right shape,
at the right place and
at the right time
Logistics Telematics: Logistics Telematics End Customer Demands & Business Need:
Increase Customer Satisfaction Providing Information at the Right Time to the Right Place
Transportation Requirements & Business Need: Know what is happening in the Field to allow Optimisation of Resources
Volvo Project: Real Time Logistics project: Volvo Project: Real Time Logistics project A Logistics Telematics R&D project is started up;
Device for Goods ID (based on a bar-code reading) that connects to a Volvo Telematics OBU (On Board Unit).
Collaboration with Volvo Logistics Corp and Open Arena Lindholmen/ Logistics Arena Purpose:
To give transporters and cargo owners visibility on the cargo in transit, through innovative use of Internet, GPS, GSM and Goods-ID technologies.
To give all parties the opportunity to get notifications on non-conformities at an early stage in order to take action.
Real Time Logistics project: Real Time Logistics project Concept:
A prototype of a mobile logistics system that provides real time information on goods events e.g. transport status on goods and load carrier (POD, POC).
A module calculating non-conformances of goods and vehicles that deviate from plan, and providing reports and notifications on this.
Field trial, demonstrate and evaluate the prototype in a real transport flow
Features:
Traceability and visibility
Integrated information flows
Fast and efficient high quality communication with all parties
Secure and reliable communication
Open platforms and interfaces
State of the art technology

Project RTL: Collaboration with the cluster Open Arena Lindholmen in Göteborg : Project RTL: Collaboration with the cluster Open Arena Lindholmen in Göteborg Why? Logistics telematics is complicated;
Today most proprietary solutions only
Limited integration of information accross actors. Some of the main gaps and missing links:
Standardization
Organizational problems
Technological/ communication
Operational
Market corporate strategies
Interfaces not defined for applications and components
Shortage in knowledge of customer needs
Volvo Technology is participating in Open Arena Lindholmen/ Logistics Arena.
The Arena is a common R&D platform from which new projects is started up in a collaborative way.
The Arena consist of partners from the industry (automotive, telematics, logistics), the academic world and politicals.
