A.B.C. on HIV AIDS:

A.B.C. on HIV AIDS Dr. Ravi Chandran

Introduction HIV - Human Immunodeficiency Virus. AIDS - Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. We want to look at the basics of HIV AIDS and see what should the Christian Response be. What would have Jesus done today?

Basic Facts:

Basic Facts A virus that steadily weakens the body's defense (immune) system until it can no longer fight off infections such as pneumonia, diarrhea, tumors and other illnesses. Unable to fight back, most people die within three years of the first signs of AIDS appearing.

Basic Facts:

Basic Facts Most of all HIV infections have been transmitted through unprotected sexual intercourse with someone who is already infected with HIV. A retrovirus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), a disease that destroys the body's ability to protect itself from infection and disease.

Basic Facts:

Basic Facts It is transmitted by the exchange of bodily fluids or blood transfusions. The Anti-HIV test for exposure to the AIDS virus detects antibodies to HIV. A confirmed positive result from the anti-HIV means that the person has been exposed to the AIDS virus, has developed antibodies to the virus and may be a carrier of the virus.

Common Christian Response:

Common Christian Response A – Abstinence. 1 Cor 6:18-20, 'Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

B – Being Faithful Eph 5:25-33, 'Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church— for we are members of his body. 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.' This is a profound mystery — but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

C – Cure / Condoms Mark 16:15-18, 'He said to them, 'Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.'

Conclusion We have to be realistic and down to earth in the church. Our religion must be pragmatic. We have to reach out to sinners including gays and lesbians. Love the sinner and 'hate' the sin. Non-compromising yet all embracing. What would have Jesus done?
