fish die Major types of water pollution : Major types of water pollution Type Sediment Examples Soil Sources Erosion Effects Disrupts aquatic food webs, clogs lakes and reservoirs, reduces photosynthesis of aquatic plants Major types of water pollution : Major types of water pollution Type Radioactive Substances Examples Radon, uranium, radioactive iodine Sources Nuclear power plants, uranium ore mining and processing Effects Some cancers, birth defects, genetic mutations Earth’s Blanket of Air : Earth’s Blanket of Air The chemical composition of the atmosphere helps maintain life on Earth Atmosphere made up mostly of nitrogen, oxygen, water vapor, and other gases Besides people and animals needing oxygen, the atmosphere is also part of several other cycles such as: Carbon cycle: makes vital nutrients available to living things Earth’s Blanket of Air : Earth’s Blanket of Air Other benefits of the atmosphere Makes life on land possible by shielding Earth from harmful solar radiation Ozone protects Earth from 95% of Sun’s UV rays Certain greenhouse gases help maintain a warm temperature near the Earth’s surface Carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapor are some of the gases When the Earth gives off heat the atmosphere absorbs the heat to keep the Earth warm Earth’s Blanket of Air : Earth’s Blanket of Air Pollution can change the chemical composition of the atmosphere and disrupt its natural cycles and functions Fossil fuel consumption is the major source of air pollution In addition to other problems, burning of fossil fuels produces Carbon Dioxide gas. This puts too much in the atmosphere and helps to increase the affects of global warming Earth’s Blanket of Air : Earth’s Blanket of Air Air pollution is a major health problem causing coughing, wheezing, headaches, as well as lung, eye, and throat irritation Long term health effects include asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, and lung cancer 200,000 deaths each year are associated with outdoor air pollution Earth’s Blanket of Air : Earth’s Blanket of Air Major primary pollutants Carbon Monoxide 49.1% Nitrogen gas 14.8% Volatile organics 13.6% Sulfur Dioxides 16.4% Particulates 6.0% Earth’s Blanket of Air : Earth’s Blanket of Air Major sources of air pollution Transportation 46.2% Stationary source fuel combustion 27.3% Industrial Processes 15.0% Solid Waste Disposal 2.5% Miscellaneous 9.0% Land Resources : Land Resources Earth’s land provides soil and forests, as well as mineral and energy resources Soil is needed to grow the food you eat Forests provide lumber for your home, wood for furniture, and pulp for paper Petroleum provides energy and is the plastic of your computer and CD boxes Minerals such as zinc, copper, and nickel make up the coins you use Land Resources : Land Resources Damage to land resources Mines There are an estimated 500,000 mines in the USA Mines produce many of the mineral resources we need But mining tears up Earth’s surface, destroys vegetation, causes soil erosion, and creates pollution that contaminates surrounding soil and water and destroys ecosystems Land Resources : Land Resources Agriculture Farmers can produce more food from the land than ever before Extensive irrigation has allowed many dry areas to be farmed for the first time But heavy pumping for irrigation of dry areas is depleting the ground water Over time, irrigation causes salinization of the soil Eventually, the soil becomes useless for plant growth Land Resources : Land Resources Trees must be cut to supply our need for paper and lumber But, the removal of forests, especially through clear-cutting, can damage land The cleared areas become susceptible to soil erosion and ecosystems and wildlife habitats are destroyed Land Resources : Land Resources Because of wise land practices, the USA has more forest land today than it did a century ago That is because much of the virgin forest that was cut down has regrown Some forestland has also been turned into tree plantations Land Resources : Land Resources Landfills Land serves as a disposal site for our waste When done correctly, there is minimal impact on land But, many landfills leak harmful wastes that get into soil and underground water Other sources of harmful waste are buried drums of chemicals (often buried illegally).
