The Context: 

The Context Fitzwilliam is the Art Museum of the University of Cambridge 5 curatorial departments, approx. 90 staff Staff include academic, curatorial, conservation, attendant and administrative Museum provides access for teaching, learning, and research and general access for the public

The Collection: 

The Collection Diverse collection of 500,000 objects managed in 5 curatorial groups: Manuscripts and Printed Books Paintings, Drawings and Prints Antiquities Applied Arts Coins and Medals

The Goal: 

The Goal Unified electronic catalogue of object records to be used for: collections management teaching, learning and research electronic access

Initial Challenges: 

Initial Challenges History of recording systems paper, computer, and ‘mind’ records Variety of internal departments & disciplines Establishment of infrastructure Variety of possible audiences Funding and resource requirements Synergies, and innovation through projects

Documentation Project: 

Documentation Project Re:source Designation Challenge Fund (DCF) 1999 – present support to establish object catalogue, digital imaging and improve access staff, software and equipment

24 Hour Museum: 

24 Hour Museum Re:source 24 Hour Museum Pilot 2002-2003 data provision using a modified DC metadata format and OAI-PMH in partnership Re:source, System Simulation, Norfolk Museum Service, The Tank Museum and The Fitzwilliam Museum

“Pharos”: 

“Pharos” Heritage Lottery Museums and Galleries Access Fund 2002-2004 website presenting deeper interpretation of 200 selected objects themes, timelines, techniques and images also linked back to catalogue

Courtyard Development: 

Courtyard Development 2002-2003 adds 3000 square metres of space adds dedicated educational facilities jointly funded with the Heritage Lottery fund other improvements for electronic access to information for museum users planned to coincide with re-opening Effects and Opportunities

Harvesting the Fitzwilliam: 

Harvesting the Fitzwilliam Joint Information Steering Committee (JISC) FAIR Programme 2002-2004 support to prepare records, images and provide access using OAI-PMH staff and equipment in partnership with AHDS, ADS and the University www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/htf
