Primary Objective Comet Particle Collection and Return to Earth Secondary Objectives IS Particle Collection and Return to Earth Comet Imaging (Nucleus and Coma) In-situ Particle Analysis for Coma Flythrough Tertiary Objectives In-situ Analysis for Interstellar/Interplanetary Dust Comet Gas Collection and Return to Earth Dynamics Science Dust Shield Monitors

Science Requirements:

Science Requirements Primary Requirement: Secondary Requirements: Tertiary Requirement: Collect 1000 comet particles >15µm at encounter velocity <6.5 km/s and return to Earth Collect 100 interstellar particles >0.1µm and return to Earth; Provide >65 images of Wild 2, having a resolution of at least 67µrad/pixel, taken within 2000 km of the comet nucleus through selected filters; Provide in-situ particle analysis for comet coma flythrough capable of resolving abundant elements in cometary solids Provide in-situ particle analysis for interstellar and interplanetary dust; Collect comet coma molecules and return to Earth; Measure dust mass fluence, large particles and comet mass upper limit; Provide dust flux measurement of 10-9g to 1g particles

Cometary Particle Collection:

Cometary Particle Collection Collect >1000 Particles >15µm diameter Wholly intact or retain unmelted fragments Collect in Silica Aerogel Thickness >3 cm Total collection area > 1000 cm2, 1200 cm2 goal IS Particle Collection >100 particles >0.1µm diameter Area >1000cm2, 1200cm2 goal thickness >1cm

Cometary Gas Collection:

Cometary Gas Collection Collection on aerogel - minimize contamination Best-effort use of other exposed materials Optical Nav. Cam. Imaging Capability for <100m/pixel resolution at 1500km >64 images total, 67 µrad/pixel >56 during encounter period Dynamic range of 12 bits 8 filter positions 0.8 Gbit storage >5% photometric accuracy - all images

Dust Flux Monitor:

Dust Flux Monitor 10-9g to 1g sensitivity CIDA Mass range 1-330 AMU Mass Resolution >150, >300 goal Detection sensitivity 2 x 10-16 to 3 x 10-9 g Area > 50cm2 0.1 Gbits storage during flyby
