Why The Increase Kyoto On 3 December 2007, the former Australian Prime Minister, the Hon Kevin Rudd, signed the instrument of ratification of the Kyoto Protocol. Australia's ratification came into effect on 11 March 2008. The Kyoto Protocol aims to reduce the collective greenhouse gas emissions of developed country Parties by at least 5 per cent below 1990 levels during 2008 to 2012 – referred to as the first commitment period.   Demand   Queensland's energy needs will continue to rise as its population, industry and development increase over time. Electricity Demand Australia's demand for electricity is predicted to increase substantially by the year 2100 (Garnaut, 2008) due to a number of factors including but not limited to:   Population growth - 45 million by 2100 (ABS, 2009) Carbon emissions trading scheme (which will add a premium to the cost of electricity.)   Industry demand for electricity (this includes the energy, transportation and agriculture sector.) The Federal government has implemented a target that will require 20% of the energy to be generated from renewable sources. This means at least some costs will inevitably past on to the consumer. Electricity Projection While electricity prices remain at approximately $0.22 /kWh at present, the introduction of the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) will see a steep rise in electricity prices.   Electricity companies will pass on the additional costs to the end user – the consumers.   This will further increase the attractiveness of our Power Saving equipment. The following chart illustrates the annual cost of electricity until the year 2050 based on current projections.

Power Factor Real Power Real Power is the measure of actual work done, the measure of energy that is converted from electricity into something else (like running an air-con)   Real Power is what we use.   Apparent Power Apparent Power is the measure of energy supplied, the measure of energy that the utility must provide in order for the equipment to do whatever it does.   Apparent Power is what we need. The Power Factor is the relationship between the power we use, and the power we need. Power Factor is a technical term that indicates the efficiency of your appliances and electrical installation.   If your installation and appliances are 100% efficient, then your power factor will be 1.   If your power factor is only 0.7, then you are wasting 30% of the electricity you are paying for.
