An Expedition of Africa Team Name 5th Grade Roosevelt Elementary School Away We Go!!

Introduction: 

Introduction Welcome to Africa… ...the home of many exotic animals, plants, and people! A country once filled with unique cultures is losing many components that defined their history and their people. Archeologists argue that Africa is not the way it used to be. Zoologist and botanists blame the loss of plant and animal life on increasing pollution. Ecologists suspect that Mother Nature is changing Africa for no real reason. Historians suspect that the people did not preserve nature and that foreigners have ruined these native lands. You are embarking on a Safari adventure that will preserve Africa for generations to come. The journey is about to begin…

How To Complete: 

How To Complete Using the flag links provided on the African map, each team will first select an African country as the focus of this safari. Once the country has been selected (and teacher approval given), each team member will select a specific role: Archeologist, Zoologist, Botanist, Ecologist, or Historian and complete all associated research and tasks. Scavenger Hunt should be completed first as this will provide background information to help team members understand their roles. Each team member will keep an accurate journal of activities and create a photo journal chronicling those activities. Team members will refer to rubric for specific grading criteria. Tasks: 

Tasks You are part of a five-person expedition hired by the International Safari Travel Agency to increase expedition travel to Africa. To accomplish your task, your team must discover why Africa is losing its cultural identity and expedition appeal. For research purposes, you and your team will choose one African country and complete a scavenger hunt, keep a written journal of your experiences, and chronicle your excursion through a photo journal and one other presentation medium of the team’s choice (PowerPoint, brochure, or newsletter). Using the team expertise, each member will seek to discover: What happened in the past? What were the people and other living things like? What does Africa look like now? What caused these changes? What will Africa be like in the future? Is Africa really losing their culture? Your expedition members include: an Archeologist a Zoologist a Botanist an Ecologist a Historian …the Safari is about to begin!

Process: 

Process This WebQuest is a team effort and will necessitate groups of five students working together in different capacities to fulfill the adventure. The instructor will form the groups. Each group will make the following team decisions: Select one country (Algeria, Egypt, Madagascar, or South Africa) – Need approval Make team assignments and complete associated responsibilities as follows: Archeologist: Explore the history and culture of the people, listing unique facts about the country. Complete Scavenger Hunt questions using identified resources. Zoologist: Identify and classify the country’s wildlife. Designate areas where wildlife reside and explain wildlife survival techniques. Complete Scavenger Hunt questions using identified resources. Botanist: Identify the country’s vegetation and explain how the vegetation supports both people and wildlife. Complete Scavenger Hunt questions using identified resources. Ecologist: Explore the country’s climatic conditions, environment, and geography. Explain how changes in these conditions affect the wildlife. Complete Scavenger Hunt questions using identified resources. Historian: Make sure every team member records their safari excursion. Compile all journaling and photo journals from team members. Record identified dangers. Complete Scavenger Hunt questions using identified resources. Develop a media presentation to promote travel to Africa using journaling and a photo journal plus a Newsletter, Brochure, or PowerPoint

Process: 

Process Timeline Day 1: Choose country – get teacher approval before proceeding. Choose individual roles – Archeologist, Zoologist, Botanist, Ecologist, and Historian. Choose presentation medium(s) – PowerPoint, brochure, newsletter, other. Day 2: Complete individual Scavenger Hunt for each role using links provided. Research country from individual role perspective. Day 3: Compile journaling and photo journal for individual roles. Day 4: Work with team to create an effective presentation medium. Day 5: Present to class.

Teacher Information - 1 Introduction This WebQuest was been created to expand 5th grade students’ cultural awareness and to provide an opportunity for them to discover and explore Africa. The idea for this WebQuest was born after watching a documentary on the African culture. Many students asked probing questions and the instructional team decided that this project would help students answer these questions and improve both research and technological skills. Our nation is becoming so culturally diverse that investing time and energy to gain familiarity with other cultures is a great investment in our students’ future. Learning about other cultures makes students more tolerant to cultural differences and brings us closer to world peace. This WebQuest fulfils this objective in a fun and educational way.
