Deadline and Forms: 

Deadline and Forms Deadline to submit the signed GAP and Proposal to the Graduate Business Office: Friday, March 23rd . This is a FIRM deadline. Both GAP and Proposal forms are available on-line at www.sfsu.edu/~gradstdy/current-form.htm ALL FORMS MUST BE TYPED ONLINE AND PRINTED TO SUBMIT TO DTC 552

Graduate Approved Program (GAP): 

Graduate Approved Program (GAP) An official document to declare MBA or MSBA program and area of emphasis. List 10 courses (30 units) from your Advanced Program Requirements (Phase III). It must be approved by a faculty advisor in your area of emphasis before submission to the Graduate Business Office (DTC 552).

MBA - GAP Requirements For MBA (10 courses) – 6 core courses + 4 electives 4 College of Business 800-level courses as electives Maximum 4 courses in the same course prefix Example: If taking FIN 819 as part of Quantitative track, can then take FIN 820, 825, 836 + one other elective outside of FIN such as MGMT or MKTG

Filing the GAP- MBA & MSBA Must have completed all 500 level course requirements Must have completed all 700 level or can be enrolled in one (1) concurrently in the semester the GAP is filed Must have completed at least two 800-level courses Overall GPA should be 3.0 or above GAP GPA should be 3.0 or above Maximum 6 units may be transferred from another institution with advisor and Graduate Division approval; or from College of Extended Learning

Filing the GAP- MBA & MSBA (Cont.) Include all the Phase III courses on the GAP, even if you are taking the class in a future semester Obtain an advisor signature from a graduate advisor in your area of emphasis If any of these conditions are not met, the GAP will be returned to you by mail. You will need to bring the GAP back to Graduate Business Office (DTC) ASAP once all the requirements are fulfilled.

Proposal: 

Proposal An official document to state the research topic, purpose of study, and methods It must be approved by two faculty readers All readers must be approved faculty members (provided in the handout) The proposal must also be typed

Format of the Proposal: 

Format of the Proposal Title of the project – No more than 12 words (University Requirement) Body of proposal has three sentences which should begin with: The purpose of this project is to… The methods to be used will consist of… The outcome of this project will be… If this format is not followed, the proposal will not be approved!

Format of the Proposal (Cont.) The PURPOSE should be in one sentence to summarize what the project is about. The OUTCOME is to describe the format of project, not the actual result of the study. For example: report, business plan, recommendation, etc.

Format of the Proposal (Cont.) The research METHOD is the main element of the proposal. It has three components: Include 2-3 data sources to be used, i.e. journals, texts, newspapers, internet websites, etc. And give an example of each data source, i.e. American Journal of Marketing or www.financedata.com Include the following statement if secondary data is from a public source: “All information is publicly available.” Also If research method involves interview or survey, always give the range of sample size. For example: 5-10 experts in the field; or 25-50 randomly selected people and attached a copy of sample questions.

Human Subjects Protocol: 

Human Subjects Protocol If your research involves human subjects, you must submit sample questions of the interview, survey, etc. with the Proposal. How many students plan to use human subjects in their research? Please include the approximate number of individuals you will be contacting in the “Methods” portion of the Proposal. After submitting the Proposal, if it is determined that the Human Subjects Protocol forms should be filed, you will be notified to fill out the additional forms required The approved Proposal will be mailed back to the student from the Graduate Division office Without the final approval of the Proposal, students can NOT begin to collect data through human subjects. GAP and Proposal Nuts and Bolts Please fill out the student information section completely All students- please provide the new SFSU student ID #. If you change classes after approval of the GAP, you must file the GAP Substitution Form (requires advisor approval). This is also available online. If you have changed readers after approval of Proposal, you must file a Change of Readers form. If you have changed from MBA to MSBA or vice versa, you must file a Change of Graduate Programs form. Find readers whom you know or have taken class with Please stay in regular contact with your readers. Always inform the 2nd reader about your progress. Check that your readers will be available when you plan to do your work. Check approval status for GAP and Proposal on MY SFSU.

** Accounting Students: 

** Accounting Students MBA and MSBA students concentrating in Accounting and planning to enroll in BUS 895 or ACCT 895 in the Fall 2007 semester should attend a meeting on WEDNESDAY, February 28th from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in DTC Classroom 567.

How to Register for the 895/898 class: 

How to Register for the 895/898 class Both the GAP and Proposal must be approved by the University Graduate Division before you can register. Students are then eligible to register for the 895/898 class through “My SFSU.” Find your first reader’s name from the on-line class schedule and use that section 5-digit schedule number to register. If you cannot find your reader’s name from the on-line class schedule, please contact our office so that a new section can be added under the reader’s name. It will take 3 - 4 business days. Some departments may do this differently, e.g. Accounting, so check with your first reader

Application for Graduation: 

Application for Graduation This is an official document to declare you are completing the degree program. File Application for Graduation in the Graduate Business Office (DTC 552) early in your last semester. The form will be available when semester begins. Deadline is September 28th, 2007 for Fall (July 13th for Summer). Fee: $40 Students will be invited to attend the Graduate Business Hooding Ceremony in May 2008.

Finishing up 895s: 

Finishing up 895s For all 895s (Research Project): Check the formatting guidelines for 895 at: http://cob.sfsu.edu/mba/current/895guidelines.cfm There are three pages to be included before your Table of Contents and the formatting is very specific. (No page numbering on these first three pages). 1. The Title Page 2. Certification of Approval- Signatures required from both readers 3. Abstract- Signature required from first reader Similar to Proposal’s structure but change of verb tense: The purpose of this project is… The methods used in the project were… The outcome of the project is…

Finishing up 895s (Cont.) When ready to submit final 895s (Research Project): Obtain a Report of Completion from the Graduate Business Office (DTC 552) -signatures required from both readers. Put the Research Project in a 3-ring black binder. Submit both the Research Project and Report of Completion to the Graduate Business Office (DTC 552). The deadline is December 17th, 2007. THIS IS A FIRM DEADLINE.

Finishing up 898s All 898s (Master’s Thesis): Different steps than the 895 Check the Grad Division formatting guidelines at: http://www.sfsu.edu/~gradstdy/thesis.htm Margin and Cotton Paper Requirements (Very Strict) Cover Page, Certification of Approval, Abstract (Very Strict) Obtain signatures from both readers Submit the Master’s Thesis to the University’s Graduate Division office (ADM 254) The deadline is December 17th, 2007. THIS IS A VERY FIRM DEADLINE. After approved by the Graduate Division, Thesis Receipt will be issued. Take the Thesis and Thesis Receipt to Rapid Copying Center in the Library.

BUS 890 Registration: 

BUS 890 Registration A Phase III Requirement for MBA students The NEW simple process for registering for the BUS 890 is to use “My SFSU” and register just like any other courses online! Read the footnote on the on-line class schedule for registration procedures.
