European Healthcare Initiative European coordination initiated since mid- 90’s by EAN International Late 90’s, European coordination transferred to representatives of France, Germany and Switzerland Informal coordination, without budget, objectives and controlling until « WEST » requested a business plan (2002) Business Plan and funding of 1 M € over 3 years adopted European Healthcare Initiative launched 2003

Hospital Audits: 

Hospital Audits Idea born in Australia (2001) In Switzerland (1995-2001), contacts with hospitals did not meet any positive result to implement EAN Strategy change in 2002 : Hospital Audits Hospital Workshop Implementation Business Plan Implementation Coach Hospital Audits became EAN Int. project in 2003 customised

Methodology /1: 

Methodology /1 Methodology = credibility of the “barcode-audit” Selection of representative hospital key-sectors Each article is quoted with the barcode-identification at the moment of the audit articles with more than one barcode  the barcode corresponding to a system same articles presenting different barcodes because the manufacturer changed the system : the most recent barcode (manufacturing / expiry date)

Methodology /2: 

Methodology /2 article = one item which can be : internal distribution unit = lowest package level ‘logistic units’ = purchase unit for the hospital (seldom in stock) a single article is noted only once for the whole hospital whilst working on the audit, ask that hospital staff point out articles directly purchased / delivered and those coming from the central warehouse.

Methodology /3 audit made in the shortest time possible i.e. central warehouses are permanently moving their articles from rows to rows report about audit in hard copy to the hospital staff who helped / coached the audit opportunity to learn more about the processes

Audits made yet Results are anonymous 4 University Hospitals in Switzerland and France Geneva (>2000 beds) Lausanne (~ 800 beds) Bern (~ 800 beds) Dijon (> 1000 beds) Next Audit : Rouen France (> 1000 beds)

Conclusion: 

Conclusion EAN realizes the break through in Healthcare… For the benefit of Healthcare expenses and patient safety As a NPO, EAN wants to contribute to the efforts made by numerous parties to enhance Healthcare practices EAN users benefit also of these progresses, as they can handle their product identification & traceability in an homogeneous way.
