Hawthorns: 

Hawthorns In Keele Village 10-15 minute walk in to the centre of campus Friendly atmosphere – community within a community A – M, large blocks - single and mixed sex (mixed blocks have single sex floors). This is where a lot of 1st years will be living T – Z, blocks of nine four-person flats, mostly for finalists Shop on site

Hawthorns: 

Hawthorns Templar Bar Student run Biggest, loudest and most active hall bar, great parties and events, thanks to efforts of Hawthorns Hall Council Plenty of opportunities to get involved – bar staff wanted! Big screen football matches and SKY Room hire for parties

Lindsay, Holly Cross & The Oaks: 

Close to the top (but south) end of campus Lindsay Court, Holly Cross and The Oaks are all en-suite rooms. Most other rooms are standard with or without a washbasin Community atmosphere Lindsay, Holly Cross & The Oaks

Lindsay Bar More of a pub look, not so ‘studenty’. Run by CFM Pool tables and MTV, weekly quiz Shop open as long as bar is, for quick snacks and the basics Lindsay, Holly Cross & The Oaks

Horwood: 

Horwood Accommodation varies again, mostly large blocks Very close to the Union and the centre of campus Health Centre is located here Z-block houses a mixture of 1st years through to Postgrads Horwood Bar Run by students Smallest bar on campus. Famous for cocktails (Bailey’s milkshakes a must), pool table, giant Jenga etc

Barnes: 

Barnes By University entrance and the School of Medicine Includes two large en-suite blocks, grouped around 6 people sharing kitchen and dining room Otherwise, standard rooms with washbasins Four-person flats, mainly for finalists 2 minutes from the Union and centre of campus Large blocks “pine look” Day Nursery located here The Pig and Rat Run by students Live bands – opportunities for student bands to perform! Pool table

Halls of Residence: 

Halls of Residence Rooms may initially look like a cell – basic furniture All rooms have a telephone for free internal calls You can receive all types of calls, but you have to register with KeyCom to make external calls. All rooms are Networked (Hallsnet) You can connect for free – better than Broadband internet access! You may get only 1 double plug socket – use an extension board

Halls of Residence: 

Halls of Residence Kitchens are shared between 4 to 36 people depending on where you live Microwaves do not come as standard in most halls! Refurbishment programme on-going Make friends with your cleaner, they are nice people but best of all they know all and they see all. They can be your best friends or not. Don’t forget to arrange your own contents insurance and T.V licence!

The Union (KUSU) Run for students by students (with permanent staff) As an entertainment venue: Made up of BJ’s Bar (downstairs and non-smoking), the Ballroom and Sam’s Bar, the Lounge bar, and K2 (all on the first floor) Live bands and good entertainment Parties: Freshers’ Party, Halloween, Christmas, Summer, Graduation Ball and many more Big screen football matches

The Union (KUSU) Everyone goes there (can get very busy!) No dress code Entry cost varies according to event Live bands and DJ’s – everything from “in house” talents to the more famous performers! For example, recent acts include Reel Big Fish The Coral Razorlight Chesney Hawks

Other Entertainment Venues And don’t forget the nightlife in Newcastle and Hanley including special student nights Union Square Run by CFM USA style American diner/bar Cocktails MTV all day everyday

Places To Eat: 

Places To Eat Union Square Diner (downstairs in Union) Harvey's - sandwich bar Le Café Comus restaurant Vite and Eat Lindsay’s Café Bar Italian Job (in Leisure Centre) Hawthorns Restaurant (for Sunday lunch) Keele Village – Sneyd Arms Or there is always the on-campus supermarket – to practice your culinary skills!

Lectures & Academia: 

Lectures & Academia Contact time per week ranges from 3-35 hours depending on your year or the subjects you’re taking (average is 12 hours). Of course you are expected to prepare and read! Science students beware! You have much more contact time than American Studies students. English does require that you read a lot of books! Lectures and Seminars between 9 am - 5 pm but some run longer – some up to 7 pm

Lectures & Academia Do your Complementary Studies Programme (CSP) in your first year Your 1st year may not count towards your final degree classification (though you must pass). BUT BEWARE! If you annoy your lecturers by not going, you will run into problems when you need them for help later on! Law students – your first year DOES count if you want professional exemption (i.e. a qualifying LLB degree) Wednesday afternoons are kept free for sport

Study Abroad : 

Study Abroad Do it if you can, it’s a great opportunity to travel Placements are world wide Most placements are in English speaking countries You will have to pay additional costs yourself Learn how to order drinks in 46 languages Fair organised in November each year by the Centre for International Exchange and Languages so you can look at the opportunities available

Representation: 

Representation Get involved – ‘knowledge is power’ Halls Council each hall has one deals with hall related issues, Block problems, car parks etc controls the money which is made in the halls bars helps organise events to run in the bars or be a block rep or a fire steward Course Rep each year has one deals with problems with lecturers and academic schools Student Representative Council (SRC) Union version of the Halls Council. Join up and get in the know about the goings on at the Union There’s a role for everyone who wants one!

Representation: 

Representation Union Officers (Part-time) Elected students who represent specific areas for students Campus Affairs, Environmental Officer, International Officer, Mature Students’ Officer etc…. Sabbatical Officers (Sabbs) Elected officers employed by the Union President VP Education and Welfare VP Communications VP Finance Use them - they are there to represent you

Practicalities On campus Newsagents Waterstones Book shop Natwest Bank Supermarket Chapel and Mosque Getting off Campus Buses run into / out of Newcastle every 15 minutes First (29 and 30) - Newcastle Arriva (85 and 25) Crewe First buses run until nearly 1am The buses run to Newcastle, Hanley & Stoke train station Shopping! Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Marks & Spencers (food) are in the town centre; Tesco’s is a short car ride away.

Practicalities The Area Newcastle-Under-Lyme Banks High Street shops Really good local market Pubs (lots of) Clubs Hanley Potteries Shopping Centre More Pubs and Clubs Other places It is the “Potteries” so there are plenty of factories and museums Then there are several good local theatres

Words Of Wisdom Get involved in something…… Societies: There are over 80 societies at Keele, for a wide range of interests: From Amnesty International, Christian Union, Nightline, Islamic Society, Jewish Society and International Student Society To Debating Society, Drama Society, Taekwon-do, Sword and Sorcery, Eco Group and Dance Sport Team Then there are several choirs, bands and orchestras

Words Of Wisdom: 

Words Of Wisdom A.U: There are a variety of sports from Rugby, Netball and Football to Fencing, Rock Climbing and Ultimate Frisbee! Whatever you are interested in there is something for you or maybe you could try something new! Freshers’ Fair: All the Societies and the A.U are at the Freshers’ fair so it has to be a must – plus you get lots of free stuff!

My Words Of Wisdom Make the most of the Keele community: Cosmopolitan atmosphere Peaks and troughs There really is something for everyone Explore the campus This is your time And remember… No matter how confident people seem, everyone will be feeling just as nervous, excited, enthusiastic and homesick as you… LIVE, LEARN and LOVE Keele – I did!!!!!
