Students are able to use real applications of subject matter. Students are exposed to new ideas and ways of thinking. Numerous state standards are addressed in several areas.MATH TOPICS: MATH TOPICS Geometric shapes Scale drawings Parallel lines Using formulas Problem solving Measuring angles Coordinate graphs Line graphs Real-world applicationACTIVITY: Geometric Shapes & Line Graph: ACTIVITY: Geometric Shapes & Line Graph Create a picture of a lighthouse using specified geometric shapes. Show examples of lighthouses and their daymarks. Create a line graph using the heights of some of the lighthouses on the Great Lakes.ACTIVITY: Measuring Angles: ACTIVITY: Measuring Angles Using a magnetic compass. Reading a compass rose on a nautical chart. Headings Bearings Source: http://academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu/geology/leveson/core/linksa/comp.htmlACTIVITY: Coordinate Graph: ACTIVITY: Coordinate Graph “We’re Beaming” on a coordinate plane Photo taken by Shelly ThomasACTIVITY: Parallel Lines: ACTIVITY: Parallel Lines Parallel Rules are used to create parallel lines on a nautical chart. Source: www.westmarine.comACTIVITY: Scale Drawings: ACTIVITY: Scale Drawings The actual dimensions of Big Sable Lighthouse on Lake Michigan are used to create a scale drawing on grid paper. Ratios & proportions can be used to create the drawing. Photo Taken by Shelly ThomasACTIVITY: Problem Solving: ACTIVITY: Problem Solving Students are given the information about the crew of a Pirate Ship and the amount of treasure found. The students then have to figure out how much each crew member will receive of the treasure.ACTIVITY: Using Formulas: ACTIVITY: Using Formulas Students use the formula: Distance = rate x time to find the missing information in word problems.ACTIVITY: Real World Applications: ACTIVITY: Real World Applications Working with nautical charts & nautical instruments Using triangulation to locate a ship at sea Using a GPS unit Finding other ways math is used in navigation. Photo taken by Shelly ThomasNAUTICAL CHARTS & INSTRUMENTS: NAUTICAL CHARTS & INSTRUMENTS Real nautical charts can be purchased and used in the classroom. Parallel Rules are used to mark headings & bearings. Dividers are used to measure distance. Photo taken by Shelly ThomasTRIANGULATION: TRIANGULATION Students are given the bearings from the boat deck to two locations on land. By marking the bearings on the nautical chart the students can find the location of the boat. Photo taken by Shelly ThomasGPS: Global Positioning Satellite Unit: GPS: Global Positioning Satellite Unit Students retrieved the waypoint (location) of our school. Students entered a new waypoint from a listing of world-wide waypoints. Source: www.westmarine.comPBL: Problem-Based Learning: PBL: Problem-Based Learning What role does math play in marine navigation? Students brainstorm uses of marine navigation and then investigate their area of interest. Students present their project to the class.
