They should be able to recall important dates, people and places. Space Exploration : Space Exploration Space exploration was rapidly growing in the 1960’s. Everyone wanted to be first to explore. The United States was in heavy competition with the USSR to get to the moon first. The moon mission was successful and helped launch many more space exploration missions. Apollo 11: Apollo 11 NASA had to come up with a crew of people who could help get the mission started. They needed engineers, astronauts and mechanics. To learn more about NASA on your own time, click here. Slide5: NASA sent a crew to the moon on July 16, 1969. It was not any easy task. Click on an astronauts name to learn more about them! Neil Armstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, Michael Collins Before the Flight : Before the Flight Astronauts had to go to very strict training before the take-off. Scientists and engineers worked to hard to build the rocket, The Saturn V, the lunar module, and the Apollo 11. To learn more, click on Preparation Before the Flight Slide7: The Lunar Module, named “Eagle”, is the aircraft that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin used to get to the moon. Slide8: The Lunar Module was connected to the Command-Service Module, called the “Command”, where Michael Collins helped navigate the men through space. Slide9: The astronauts primary mission: to perform a manned lunar landing and return the mission safely to Earth. Slide10: The space ship landed at the “Sea of Tranquility” on July 20, 1969. The moon’s surface is made up of rocks with a lot of craters, boulders and ridges on it’s surface. When Neil Armstrong noticed that when he stepped onto the moon’s surface, his foot sunk into the soil a few inches. Slide11: As Neil Armstrong took his first step onto the moons surface, he said the most famous quote from the launch: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Click here to see some video from the landing and watch astronauts walk on the moon! Slide12: The mission took 8 days, 3 hours and 3 minutes. The United States was the first country to land on the moon. The National goal to safely go to the moon and return home was accomplished. Review: Review Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins were the 3 main astronauts. They left on July 16, 1969 and were gone for 8 days. Main goal of the mission: to perform a manned lunar landing and return the mission safely to Earth The United States was the first country to land on the moon.
