Typical Ranking Inquiry:

Typical Ranking Inquiry I appreciate you allowing me to be the one to share this information. As I am sure you understand, I am not looking for special treatment. I have played tournament racquetball for over 20 years and in the past have found the ranking system to be a great measure of other players, thus I could use it to gauge my skill level as I moved up. Jim Daly is a nice guy, but I have only played him twice in the past year or so, and I won both matches. Before the last match I checked and his ranking was several hundred higher than mine, so I was actually anticipating he had improved drastically, but that wasn’t the case. I beat him recently relatively easily in two games. I notice Mike Daly of MA does not appear in the rankings at all, yet he is clearly a much better player than Jim. He beat another local player Rick Rivera rank 410 and in discussion afterward Mike and Rick stated that Mike had beat in all 3 matches they have played in the past year or so. Rick is now under 400 and Mike is not listed. Looking through the rankings it is clear to me there are players ranked higher than others incorrectly. I honestly don’t see this system working itself out as was expected, unless the time frame is 10 years. There are many players in the around 400 that I have never lost to. I thought of seeking out tournaments they play in, to get a shot at them, but the results with Jim Daly indicate it won’t make any difference, so why would I bother. I had already made the decision this year I would forgo playing age brackets, as there is no upside for me. If I lose I move down, if I win I don’t move up since the players that play age brackets locally aren’t typically ranked higher than I am. This means I play open with just 1 serve which I really don’t enjoy as much, but nonetheless I do it and beat someone higher ranked and see no clear change in the rankings. I place second in the 45+ New York States last year and first in the New England Regional’s. So it seems the rankings are nothing but a sore subject for many. I am curious as to the cause, but don’t anticipate it will get fixed quickly. Regards, Stan Shaw
